The Tamron 18-400 is a thought that several of us have pursued.
I have the Tammy 18-400mm for my Canon 80D and I do like it for a walk around however I recently purchased a Fuji X-T1 with the 18-55mm lens and it is fast becoming my favorite walk around combo.
It depends on whether I'm out for a snapshot or using forethought. Since we're talking walk-around, I'm assuming snapshots of anything anywhere at anytime, disciplined or undisciplined. For this scenario, I lean towards my 35mm 1.8 on my D7000 for a field of view similar to what my eye sees. It just doesn't make sense to me to try to have gear that can capture everything of interest at any point in time while I'm walking around. My vision doesn't work that way.
I had the 28 300 on my D700. The lens is a compromise. Good color rendition but some distortion on a big scene.
It really depends on what kind of an image creator you are. Their are compromises that are interesting.
I now using Sony mirrorless. To just shoot good scenes like a soccer game or walk around I use the Sony RX 10 III
bridge camera with 24 600mm zeiss an amazing lens considering it is built into camera. Creative I like my Sony zeiss
55mm 1.8 great lens sharp and bokeh is really strong. On the a7s II. In the messenger bag I carry for biz and anywhere I usually
have an RX100 IV the small great camera. And sometimes the Sony a6300 with the 16 70 zeiss zoom. Beautiful
color on this setup and the 16mm is really helpful.
OK I have experience with Nikon's and still admire them. I think a prime would be most first choice. Like a 35mm.

You guys walk around with 200, 300, 400mm lens....really. For a D500 50mm 1.4....period.
Another vote for Nikkor 28-300 with this lens on your camera you could sell all your other lens and never miss a shot.
Like yourself, I've tried to find a walk around lens, too. Unfortunately, no luck. They all have to be carried. So, my choice, which is on my camera 90% of the time is a 28~300.

Looking for suggestions for a versatile walk around lens in a moderate price range. Any great experiences?
Thanks
Thanks for all the suggestions. Guess it's a matter of opinion. Many options.
I have used the Nikon 18-200 for over 5 years; a versatile walkabout lens. Any distortion can be easily corrected in Lightroom.
I like my Tamron 18-400 as my walk around lense. Especially when traveling I dont have to carry multiple lenses.

Yeah, but you're old.
As another old guy, I have to endorse the idea of using the 35mm f1.8 as your walkabout lens. Just you, your camera and your eye. No zoom lens as a crutch.

I use a Sigma 24-105 ART for this job. Upon occasion, I use a Nikon 20/2.8D. YMMV.
I use a Nikkor 18-300 on my D7000. A bit heavy but covers all the bases (or most of them).
