It is now too late for you but I bought mine with the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens for 1/2 price around $500.00. I bought this lens because I already had the 24-120 for my Nikon D810 and liked it a lot. Most of my shots on vacation come in this focal length so for me it makes an excellent all purpose lens.

That depends on what your moderate range is.

Top of the range: Nikon 17-55mm G

Middle range: Sigma/Tamraon 17-50mm

Low range: Nikon 18-55mm G

Older Lenses: Nikon AF D and pre D lenses in a similar range, maybe a 16-35mm

I take "walk around" to mean something covering a range from wide (18mm) to long (200+mm).

How about 16-80mm. 17-70mm?

I'm torn between two lenses. The canon 18-135 and the Canon 70-200 f4. I love them both.

Walk around lens to me when I first got started was a 50mm on a 35mm SLR. In college we has assignments where we had to use a 'normal' lens. Today I will put the 35mm F/1.8 on a D7200. It would be the same on the D500, just a bit heavier.

Amazing how using a prime instead of a zoom makes you look at things a little more before you press the shutter button.

Personally, I agree with this. A prime forces me to be creative.
GF1 w/ 19mm Sigma ... (38mm equiv.) (no PP on this shot, definitely needs some!)

Tamron 18-400 which replaced my previous "walk around" lens, a Tamron 18-270.

The 28-300 is a lens that was not designed for the APS sensor. It can be used with a cropped sensor camera but the wide angle advantage is lost. The lens performs much better with FX bodies.
I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the 18-140 VR.
There are indeed many choices.
