One observation for those of you deciding between the nikon D3300 and D3400. The 18-55 kit lens that comes with the D3300 is the AF-S lens, the 18-55 kit lens that comes with the D3400 is an AF-P lens. You can see this on the B&H website and look at the pictures of the lens. The P lens is faster focusing and a sharper lens than the AF-S lens, I have had both. About the only reason I would get the D3400 over the D3300 which is $100 more would be to get the P lens. The AF-S lens is a sharp lens for a kit lens but the AF-P is faster focusing and a little sharper. Its up to you if its worth the extra $100 either would be a good choice.

I know I wasn't the poster but thank you all for the advice. It is very helpful and I am definitely going to do a little more research before I decide what to buy!

Firmware updates allow for use of P lenses on the D3xxx and D5xxx series.

If you,re not committ
ed to Nikon because of lenses, you might want to consider a Sony. The A68 is a DSLR type camrera with mirrorless features like EVF, full time live view, and has HSS which the Nikon D3xxx and D5xxx lack, plus has micro focus adjust not available on any entry level DSLR as far as I know and has exotic af of A77II plus the ability to use Minolta lenses that can be a bargain. A68 also has ibis.

I also considered the D5300 but the price was a little higher than I can really afford right now. I like that with D3300 I will also be able to afford a third lens besides the two that it comes with. I really want the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. : )

The 50mm f/1.8 lens is a great choice. You can find them as factory refurbished models priced well and Nikon USA usually has a sale on factory refurbished products around Presidents’ Day. As an alternative, the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX lens gets incredibly high ratings by many professional. If I were considering both, I may go with the 35mm first, especially if you have the 50mm range covered by another lens. But, what you shoot depends on your choice. Good luck in your decision.

I have seem it refurbished for $169 at times. Check Nikon USA, Cameta Camera, or an of the authorized Nikon retailers.

I have been researching these two cameras myself. I am about to buy my first dslr soon. I have a limited budget and am also a beginner so I wanted something fairly user friendly and on the lower end of the money spectrum. I have decided to go with the D3300 as I feel it will suit me just fine. And I think the "perks" on the d3400 are not work the extra cash. I also like that the D3300 has a self cleaning sensor which the 3400 lacks.

Great Desision! I too own a Nikon D3300 (used), and due to limited $$$, I want to have lens too, so now I have all 4 Nikon lens, 18-55, 55-200, 35mm 1.8g, 50mm1.8g, have had good success thus far and highly reccommend the Nikon D3300 as a beginner DSLR.
Also, you will eventually want to explore Flash Photography, with a Speedlight Flash, many choices, Altura, Yongnuo, Newer, Nikon,(expensive), etc.
I personally chose the Altura for Nikon + the Altua Trigger/receiver set for "Off-Camera" Flash Photography. But do your own research & Investigations before you buy.

Maggiemay, there are some available at Cameta Camera, Nikon USA factory refurbished , for $174.95. Cameta also extends the Nikon 90 day warranty to one year. I have purchased from them many times and can say they are excellent to deal with and shipping is prompt. Totally your call but you can save a few more dollars and get a longer warranty. You will love the lens. It is always in my camera bag. Very sharp!

I've used the Nikon D3000 series for years and I am very happy with them. I presently own the D3000 and D3200. I had a D3100 but trashed it and my lens in a fall. You gave me a GAS attack when I looked on Ebay and saw the prices of the D3300! I kept telling myself, "I don't need a new camera. I don't need a new camera."

I can guarantee that you will be very happy if you purchase a D3300 (especially at the reduced prices!)

Maggiemae and Sam1 I was given the D3300 as a Christmas gift. It came with two lens. I then purchased the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Zoom Lens for taking pictures of the solar eclipse. I highly recommend it. It has been an easy to learn how to use and very versatile camera for my introduction to a DSLR. I believe you will find that it provides more bang for the buck as a beginner camera then the 3400. I.E. no sensor cleaner and a reduced power flash. I have attached two pictures from the eclipse taken with the lens. The second picture is Venus showing during totality.

The price was one of the reasons I was really liking this particular camera. I know this is going to sound stupid but what does GAS stand for?

Yes, I also have considered the 70-300mm but I think I am going to get the 35mm f/1.8 first. Thank you for the advice.

GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I was not suggesting that lens. I agree with you on the lens you are thinking about. The photos were to show you what the D3300 can do with a good add on lens.
