Just curious. I have read a lot of comparisons between the two cameras, but for a beginning or intermediate enthusiast, I see no serious advantage to a D3400. I see great deals on used (a lot barely) 3300's including a few lens for the same or less than a 3400.

Nikon has a habit of "improving" a new model by removing some features that the previous model had. If you've read the comparison, you know how the two compare. Just to be thorough, I'll give you more comparison sites.

The D3300 is great, I saw no big advantage to the D3400, so I jumped
to the D5300 which was a great choice - now I'm on the D7200.
I am selling some of my Nikon gear if interested- PM me for details.

I have been researching these two cameras myself. I am about to buy my first dslr soon. I have a limited budget and am also a beginner so I wanted something fairly user friendly and on the lower end of the money spectrum. I have decided to go with the D3300 as I feel it will suit me just fine. And I think the "perks" on the d3400 are not work the extra cash. I also like that the D3300 has a self cleaning sensor which the 3400 lacks.

Your research is accurate!! Good luck. The D5300 has the articulating screen, built in wifi, hdr in camera and bracketing.
All very useful.

I also considered the D5300 but the price was a little higher than I can really afford right now. I like that with D3300 I will also be able to afford a third lens besides the two that it comes with. I really want the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. : )

Remove...

My belief is simply to save cost. But I have not seen a reason given by Nikon. They have done similar stupid downgrades on many of their latest models, such as deleting the second card slot on the D7500.

You might really want the 35mm f1.8. It is the equivalent of 50 mm on a full frame.

I really want the 35mm but it is 100$ more. I have to see how much I can afford when I get ready to buy.

Be sure to get the AF-S version. The 50mm you see for $100 less is likely the AF model. The D3300 cannot autofocus it.

I'd save a little longer and get the D5300, the advantages are many!

When choosing lenses you'll be relegated to AF-S lenses (lenses with built-in focusing motors) if you want auto focus. The D3xxx and the D5xxx series do not have in camera focusing motors and any AF lens D or pre D will be manual focus only as they are screw drive. Also being crop sensor cameras figure in the 1.5 crop factor, so the 50mm f/1.8 you're looking at would have the field of view of a 75mm lens on a full frame body.
