I do understand and thank you for the response. You did made an excellent point.
Maybe, I'll send one back to B & H, you can buy it for refurbished and then I'll buy it from you as used. I might save $13!!

Your apology accepted and thank you! Sorry for the sarcasm but I always wanted to buy the refurbished that has been returned because the person who bought it didn't like it. I don't want to buy neither a demo or one that is defective and fixed. But of course I wouldn't know which one is which.

Well I am guilty of the same thing before but I don't do it any more. Fry's electronics would sell any items returned for 10% less. I would buy the item then return it and then buy the same item for 10% less.

It takes a big and mature person to admit being wrong and then apologize. We could use quite a bit more of that on the national scene. Thanks Mark, have a great day.

I have not used that technique, but I have considered trying and buying. I'll refrain. I have to live with myself - my wife must too, but she does it by choice.

Last week I responded to a poster and suggested he purchase two cameras from B & H, give them a test run and return the one that did not suit his needs.
I was criticized for the suggestion. I responded and said there was nothing wrong with the action. I thought about it for a while, contacted Herschel (B & H rep)and posed the question. Herschel was kind enough to respond and offer his opinion. In a very diplomatic tone, he provided sufficient reasons why my suggestion was not fair to B & H. I accepted and agreed with his rationale.

I want to apologize to the two UHhers who essentially said the same as Herschel, however one was with unnecessary sarcasm.
I was wrong and I'll never suggest or use that technique.

Thanks,
Mark

Thank you for telling the many other UHHs your findings. I work part time in retail at the service desk and I can not tell you how many times people buy two items, try both of them to see which of the items they like best, and then return the one they didn't like as much. I think they think we will put it out on the counter again as "new" and resell it, but usually it will be claimed out. Since businesses are in it for profit, the cost of the loss of the returned product is passed on to all of the customers as an increased cost for all the other products. There are way too many people that do not know or understand this - or do not ever care about this other than to complain about rising prices. I am fairly certain that B&H, Adorama, Keh, and others run their business no differently than the one I work for - except their products cost 10s to 100s of times more than what we normally sell.

With all due respect to Herschel, I disagree. Is it any different than buying one camera, deciding it doesn't work for you, sending it back and buying another one? People who are in the mail order business should be well aware that returns are a part of the business, and part of the reason they have put so many brick and mortar camera stores out of business.

Then why do so many recommend to rent a camera or lens to try it out? It cost a few hundred dollars to do that why don't they just buy it and return?

Thanks Bruce. I think you are one of the friendliest and responsive people on UHH. Your responses are always so non-judgmental and helpful!!

There is integrity in every transaction. Do as you would be done by, or be done by as you did? Charles Kingsley had a decent perspective that still applies.

You are demonstrating integrity in this post. That has significant value.

If it is a calculated thing to exploit the 'generosity' of businesses, I would have a problem with that if I was on the receiving end. Mistakes happen, but there are costs associated with that. It may be the cost of doing business, but that doesn't mean that is is ethical. I consider B&H to be a very ethical business. They may make mistakes, but they deal with them.

Totally agree. But what I’ve realized is that we all define integrity in different ways.
