Why is Arthur Morris, wildlife photographer, switching from Canon to Nikon?

I really don't care to speculate whether there were alteriar motives for Artie's move away from Canon to Nikon. I know personally, if I had represented and supported a company for years and in turn they dumped me, I would be a little pissed off. But he didn't dump Canon the day they dumped him; he continued to use their gear. I have been with Artie on several occasions and numerous times he said, at his age, his flight photography skills were not, in his opinion, as good as he desired. He claims he made the switch to Nikon after getting, again, in his opinon, better flight results. I can't and will not argue with someone who has been doing bird photography for the past several decades. Let's see what he has to say in a couple of months about the overall comparison between Canon and Nikon. I am sure he will have lots good information to offer and having used both, hopefully we will get an unbiased comparison for his type of photography.

So, in other words, Nikon has now copied what Canon has done for a couple decades in their 1D-series and since 2009 in the 7D-series.

What Canon lacks is a single model that has that AF system AND captures 36/46/50MP image AND can shoot 10 fps or faster. The $5500 1DX Mark II has a premium, high performance AF system and can shoot at 14 fps, but is only 20MP. The $3300 5D Mark IV has pretty good 30MP image... but 46MP is 50% more and 5DIV can "only" shoot at 7 fps and "only" has a slightly lower performance AF system (similar in most ways to 1DXII's). Or, for another $3500 or $3700 there's the 5DS or 5DS-R... 50MP, but only 5 fps and an AF system that's a generation older and a wee bit lower performance than the 5DIV's.

More power to Art Morris if he has the money to make a brand switch like this! At about $3300 the D850 itself is a good value and it ticks all the boxes mentioned above. But the new "FL" super telephoto Nikkors he'll be needing are all a little to a lot more expensive than the comparable Canon lenses (all of which have had fluorite all along).

800mm f/5.6 Nikkor FL $16,297
800mm f/5.6 Canon $12,999

180-400mm 1.4X Nikkor FL $12,397
200-400mm 1.4X Canon $10,999

600mm f/4 Nikkor FL $12,297
600mm f/4 II Canon $11.500

500mm f/4 Nikkor FL $10,297
500mm f/4 II Canon $8999

400mm f/2.8 Nikkor FL $11,197
400mm f/2.8 II Canon $9999

70-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor FL $2797
70-200mm f/2.8 II Canon $1950

Nikon isn't yet producing some models w/fluorite, that Canon offers:

300mm f/2.8 II Canon $6100
200mm f/2 Canon $5700
100-400mm II Canon $2050
70-200mm f/4 IS Canon $1150
70-200mm f/4 Canon $600

I'll have to see what he wants for them... maybe I'll buy Art's used Canon gear! (And sell his lenses back to him at a profit, when Canon leapfrogs Nikon with the 5DS-R Mark II or 1DX III! )
So, in other words, Nikon has now copied what Cano... (show quote)

First of all if Morris is jumping ship to Nikon he will probably more than likely be a member of Nikon Professional Service which means he can borrow and lenses he wants from Nikon for free. So he doesn't have to spend a ton of cash on lenses. NPS usually has the lens at your front door in 48 hrs.

Popular pro photographers change full frame camera Brands all the time. Nothing new. Tony Northrup and more. There are individual reasons why changes are made. President Obama's White House Photographer, started with a Canon 5D Mark II in 2009. Then upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark III. Then in Obama's second term, the photographer switched to the the Sony a7rii. No endorsement/advertising money from Sony was received for changing over. He's no longer the White House Photographer anymore. Who knows what he is using now. Maybe a Nikon D850? President Trump's White House pro photographer is a woman. I read she uses a Canon 5D Mark iv. Unless she is a Canon loyalist, who know if she may change camera Brands? Canon appears to be the overall winner, the past 9 years though. I've never owned a Canon DSLR. All camera Brands, have very good cameras for various purposes.

Just a few days ago there was a heated discussion on this forum http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-508909-1.html with near unanimous consensus that it is the photographer and not the equipment that mattered. Perhaps some of our all-knowing members who said that a good photographer can take good pictures with a bad camera should share their wisdom with Mr Morris!

I've read AM's blog the last two days - it almost reads like one long infomercial! And this morning he was taking personal credit for the fact that a particular store sold out all six of the D850's they had in stock ... as though stores had been having trouble unloading them.

LOL, I guess NO ONE was aware of the D850 until this week. 😉

Although some tools are certainly better than others for specific jobs and I don't really think that Canon has a comparative to the D850 with features, DR and frame rate as of yet, one needs to look more broadly as mentioned by others earlier in the thread that could point to money and perks as well.

Honestly .... after reading his words, I'm not sure I could ever enjoy being around him - he comes across as being very arrogant. That may have come between him and Canon, and if he doesn't change ...

I guess when you are good and know it, you have a tendency toward arrogance.
