Fine job! The infamous food chain...

Thank you Dave! Yes, there is a lot of something trying to eat something going on out there.

Nicely done Phil ! .... looks like a moorhen ? - thanks for sharing

Thank you Larry! It is an American Coot, I grew up calling them mud hens. We do see Common Moorhens here in the winter but Coots are far more common and are year rounders. They are easy prey and high on the menu list of eagles and Peregrine falcons. I appreciate your visit.

I had to get over the unease when I started photographing birds, especially hawks. The worst for me was watching a hawk catch and slowly kill a Virginia Rail, a bird I rarely get to see.
Your photo is what it is, a fact of every day life. You caught it very well.

I am at peace with the way things work out there but I must say I had very dark thoughts about the Cooper's Hawk that took one of my beautiful little Juncos at the feeder yesterday. I appreciate your visit and comment Katy, thank you.

Thank you Bill I appreciate that thought! I guess I had concerns regarding folk's response to the fourth shot, but damn I love having my choice of shutter speed confirmed..... drop by drop!

It is never my intention to shock or offend. I have a life long interest in birds of prey and capturing a moment like this is what keeps me going out there. I posted a less explicit set of this bird last week but held off on these, so viewer beware. This is how raptors make their living and I felt very fortunate to be there. These were taken at the Calif. State Refuge Gray Lodge in the northern Sacramento valley.

Excellent set Phil. Love those raptors. Nature doing it's thing. Glad you decided to post these. Still waiting to get some shots of one here grabbing a meal.

Very nice set of pics. Nature at it's best, like the others say, everything needs to eat to live.

Quality very good. I like the one best where the body of the eagle and its head are not so blocked by the branches.
