With the rapid changes in technology, endless varieties of subject matter, and no boundaries for improving composition and artistic skills, we all have lots to learn if we keep an open mind.

Being relatively new to UHH, I'm not sure who's considered a "know it all," but I have to say that some of the more spirited debates (arguments?) I've read here have been the most useful from a learning standpoint. A couple of yesterday's posts were a good example - lengthy, somewhat contentious, but very educational for me.

And many of the debates have been quite entertaining -- and often show good humor on the part of members.

It's when some members become less than civil and start attacking each other personally that the learning stops and the forum slips into the gutter. If we can't get rid of that crankiness altogether, I hope we can at least keep it to a minimum.

Well stated!

Take me for an example.... Ive been shooting professionally, ( I have clients that pay me. Its my PROfession), for a very long time, that being said, I don't know it all, and run across situations that are new to me and it forces me to update my understanding of photography. There are those here that seem to know everything, and yet from their comments its apparent that there is yet more room for learning.

Always

I learn something new almost daily and in photography there is a lot I want to learn yet as well!

Learning is ongoing in any field. If there is one who claims to know all here or anywhere might be a bit delusional. In Architecture most states require 12-18 hours of continuing education including testing.

There is always more things to learn about photography or any other disciplines but is there more room in one person head to learn more? That is the question.

It takes a brave photographer to say there's no room to learn. Every photographic experience/situation is on the learning curve.

One of the many things I love about photography is, it is a never ending learning process. The more I know, the more there is to learn. Which for me is, what keeps it exciting and interesting.

If anyone finally reaches that plateau of knowing everything about photography, I think it would be time for a new hobby or profession. It's the journey not the destination that makes this fun.

Learning is only half the battle. Being able to put into practice is what matters. I spent years taking golf lessons, reading books, video analysis etc etc. Everybody said I had a really nice easy swing, but once the club hit the ball I was lucky if I could get past the Ladies' tee.

Very true.. Those that only have an intellectual understanding of how photography works and no experience, may give advice here that may not be correct. Putting education to real life experience is when understanding is more complete. It's so obvious, Repleo, that some of the advice given here lacks experience. The truth is that with experience (but lack of talent) results in mediocre results. Those that don't have talent but only intellectual understanding....Teach.....!!!
Anyone can pick up a brush and make a painting, but only those that ,naturally, have that special insight and talent are recognized as being great.....

I started shooting analog (it sound so much better than "film") in 1973. I've been shooting digital for about 10 years. I am constantly learning new things. I've become quite good at off camera flash; I've been post processing for about 7 years and constantly learning new things about/in Photoshop Elements. I have a very small library of analog (it sounds so much better than "print") books and a much larger library of e-books. I'm constantly learning (and enjoying doing it!).

I certainly hope I haven't come across that way. Haven't said a lot here anyway, but it would be foolish for me to act like a know it all. I know enough to get some nice pictures out to stock agencies, and they occasionally sell. But there is so much to photography, I couldn't learn it all in a 1000 years. I know enough to do what I need to do, but haven't taken a lot of time to really, truly, get to know my programs, which are lightroom and photoshop. There is a lot I need to learn even about my camera. But lighting? Lighting is so tricky, and I think ultimately it is everything. I look at really professional pictures and I think, how do they do that? They get very soft colors, especially at twilight and sunrise, and the colors seem to flow into each other very smoothly. I do think that has a lot to do with the types of lenses that are used, I think Nikon is softer than Canon, but maybe not. Well, it just all gets very, very, interesting.

I am very new here so it is obvious that I have much to learn. But I must say that I agree with WingPilot that no matter what endeavor that you embark on, you will never know it all. I just hope to one day take quality pictures that are as enjoyable to everyone else that sees them as they are enjoyable to take. And hopefully, I can make a friend or two along the way. To me it is the joy of learning that drives me to keep going , and I hope that I never lose that.
