I took pictures with an Argus C-3 when I was in the army and went to Korea in 1965. Using ASA/ISO of 64, with maybe 250th highest second shutter speed and not much of a wide aperture. I found it fairly easy to get decently exposed slides.
I have gone through Canon AE-1, Canon A-1, Canon EOS 1-N, Bronica SQA, Canon 20D, Canon 7D along with misc. pocket point and shoots
Now I have a Canon 5D mark III and a 400 page instruction manual. When moving through cameras you are always learning how to use them and learning how to take better pictures. Anyone saying there is nothing else to learn is someone that does not want to learn something new.

Learning is only half the battle. Being able to put into practice is what matters. I spent years taking golf lessons, reading books, video analysis etc etc. Everybody said I had a really nice easy swing, but once the club hit the ball I was lucky if I could get past the Ladies' tee.

Take me for an example.... Ive been shooting professionally, ( I have clients that pay me. Its my PROfession), for a very long time, that being said, I don't know it all, and run across situations that are new to me and it forces me to update my understanding of photography. There are those here that seem to know everything, and yet from their comments its apparent that there is yet more room for learning.

What's to learn? You turn the little dial on the top to the green square, and push down on the little black button. The only tricky part is to remember to take off that black saucer-like thingummy that's in front of the big round glass in front. Easy peasy. A hedgehog could do it.

LoL, it’s even MORE apparent from the pics they post, those that post.
I’ve shot professionally on and off for the last 50 years and I learn on EVERY shoot, whether it’s commercial or sports or portraits.
I’m glad to share what litte I know and post a pic when it’s pertinent, but most of what happens here is NOT about making ones photography better but wanting to know how to improve ones gear, but that’s so boring I don’t comment much!!!
SS

Amen to that. All the gear in the world of the top of the line means nothing and most responses to those topics are lame opinions based on only what they use.

I study the image and try to learn from that. How would I shoot it. Could composition be better etc. I also lurk in the shadows here reading comments on various subjects.

There is always room for me to learn, unlike some of the so-called "experts" on this forum who think they do know-it all.

I'm an Amateur/Enthusiast when it comes to photography, but an educator by profession. As an educator I believe that in any discipline, passion, or profession, there is always a need to learn more. The need to learn and grow is always present and never ends. A concept we try to instill in students is "being a life-long learner."

Photography is an art just like music . I picked up a camera in 1969 and a guitar in 1975 . And after all that time there are songs that are challenging to learn and lighting situations where it’s back to the drawing board ! If a person thinks they know it all , that’s just vanity and that means they stopped at a level they feel good about . For me , I can’t wait for something new to challenge me or a situation that I have to figure out .
It’s called ( learning ) ..And learning new things makes you better at whatever you do !

I’ve earned a living shooting also even into retirement I’ve been plucked out and shooting HS sports part time
That said
If your not shooting your not learning
There is always something to learn
I’m in complete agreement with you, and than I skip over those comments, as NO-ONE knows everything but there is someone who seems like they do! I simply block them so I don’t have to endure the bs it’s a shame as nubbys don’t know whom to pass over.
I’m pretty shore I’m gonna get a bit of guff on this one

You are right, the moment I stop learning will be the moment the undertaker takes over. I try to always comment on experience rather than belief and I have been wrong a few times and when corrected I learn from others.

Look at it this way:
You are standing with your ankles in the water at the bottom of a sloping beach. Imagine that you can place markers at he extent of your vision. Now, walk up the slope of the beach to a higher point - turn around and notice how much further your vision now goes beyond the markers. Put new markers and again move higher on the beach and again see how your vision has expanded.
The point is that as your knowledge expands you gain a new horizon and will continue to do so as you continue to learn.

I don't get it. If it's apparent that someone has room for learning, then how is it that they seem to know everything.

Or do you mean, there are those here that act like they know everything. There's a lot of that going around.

If you do not continue to learn and evolve than you get in a rut. That rut over time turn into a valley. For me any one who knows everything, knows nothing.

I talk to younger video film makers and photographers (I'm 62) and I find that I learn more from them than the reverse. Sure they are interested in the old school processes as they relate to the digital world they grew up with, but for me they are a great resource for my transformation from film to digital. They keep me learning especially when it is about the digital darkroom which at times is daunting to me, but I am slowly figuring things out with their help. So there is truth to the old saying that one is never to old/young to learn. This quest for knowledge I believe can keep one young in body and spirit and connected with our fellow man.
