So, in other words, Nikon has now copied what Canon has done for a couple decades in their 1D-series and since 2009 in the 7D-series.
What Canon lacks is a single model that has that AF system
AND captures 36/46/50MP image
AND can shoot 10 fps or faster. The $5500 1DX Mark II has a premium, high performance AF system and can shoot at 14 fps, but is only 20MP. The $3300 5D Mark IV has pretty good 30MP image... but 46MP is 50% more and 5DIV can "only" shoot at 7 fps and "only" has a slightly lower performance AF system (similar in most ways to 1DXII's). Or, for another $3500 or $3700 there's the 5DS or 5DS-R... 50MP, but only 5 fps and an AF system that's a generation older and a wee bit lower performance than the 5DIV's.
More power to Art Morris if he has the money to make a brand switch like this! At about $3300 the D850 itself is a good value and it ticks all the boxes mentioned above. But the new "FL" super telephoto Nikkors he'll be needing are all a little to a lot more expensive than the comparable Canon lenses (all of which have had fluorite all along).
800mm f/5.6 Nikkor FL $16,297
800mm f/5.6 Canon $12,999
180-400mm 1.4X Nikkor FL $12,397
200-400mm 1.4X Canon $10,999
600mm f/4 Nikkor FL $12,297
600mm f/4 II Canon $11.500
500mm f/4 Nikkor FL $10,297
500mm f/4 II Canon $8999
400mm f/2.8 Nikkor FL $11,197
400mm f/2.8 II Canon $9999
70-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor FL $2797
70-200mm f/2.8 II Canon $1950
Nikon isn't yet producing some models w/fluorite, that Canon offers:
300mm f/2.8 II Canon $6100
200mm f/2 Canon $5700
100-400mm II Canon $2050
70-200mm f/4 IS Canon $1150
70-200mm f/4 Canon $600
I'll have to see what he wants for them... maybe I'll buy Art's used Canon gear! (And sell his lenses back to him at a profit, when Canon leapfrogs Nikon with the 5DS-R Mark II or 1DX III!
)
