I went to school for photography , then I went and took more classes, then I went again ( this time I knew more than the instructor who only shot portraits his whole life)
Then I took Photoshop classes, while all this was going on I took the Great courses photography course ( great as a refresher) then the Stanford photography lectures.

I'm not even close to knowing it all , in fact there are a lot here that are so far above me, I'll never get to that level .

With that said, there are a LOT here that just THINK they know it all. Ive seen so many wrong answers here on UHH from the know it alls , its sad.

My Dad gave me a box camera 62 years ago, when I was 8 years old, and I used film for the next 52 years; ten years ago, when I came to digital, I came with a strong bias towards base ISO, but in recent months, seeing what others are doing with higher ISO settings has caused me to re-examine what I think.

Take me for an example.... Ive been shooting professionally, ( I have clients that pay me. Its my PROfession), for a very long time, that being said, I don't know it all, and run across situations that are new to me and it forces me to update my understanding of photography. There are those here that seem to know everything, and yet from their comments its apparent that there is yet more room for learning.

Only idiots believe there is nothing more for them to learn. Unfortunately, UHH is replete with them.

I have forgotten more about photography than most know. That's the problem I've forgotten! Always something or forgotten to experiment with. - dave

Flash photography is something I definitely can and wish to improve upon; especially concerning the use of multiple flash units simultaneously. From what I can tell, most hobbyists' flash photography skills are very rudimentary and limited, with plenty of room for improvement.

I love photography because I am always in a constant state of learning about it. If I live to be 100 I'd still not be anywhere near knowing it all. What I have found, however, with many photographers is that instead of continuously learning new information they simply seem to repeat their first year of learning for the next however-many-years they take photographs and do not seem to be able to grow in the art of photography. When I first started I assumed that anyone who had been taking photos for many years must be a good photographer; I was amazed to find this is not so.

If you stop learning, you stop growing and improving....

My memory is hazy, but I think it was Mark Twain who said:
"The trouble with many people nowadays is not that they don't know anything, but that they know so much that ain't so".

Personally I think it's always good to be in danger of learning something new.

In anything, not just photography, anyone who thinks they know it all and has no room to learn or improve has a fool for a roommate

I'm with you, Lee. I worked nearly 30 years in the printing industry in various Photo Departments, took up personal photography as a "passion" more than a hobby almost 40 years ago, and there are a few other tid-bits I could throw out. What I like best about UHH is that nearly every day I learn something here that I previously did not know/realize, from some of the knowledgeable and quite talented folks here. I'll almost certainly never meet any of them, but I promise that I am and will be forever grateful to them as a result of their words-and-works.

Its impossible to know it all. Because just as you get close somebody invents something else for you to learn. And on and on and on......

No matter what you know there is always room for learning or re-learning. The more one knows, the smarter ones realize how ignorant they are.

BTW being a professional by definition only means paid for work, good or bad.

For sure, there are good doctors and there are quacks.. I strive for excellence because I need more clients ...

Well said cameraF4,, Some here are so knowledgeable about technical things... But a good photographer is one that has talent... After all cameras are only a tool.. Photographers that are very up technically but lack talent.... teach...
