Thanks for the lens flare explanation. I was curious what people that take pictures would make of this.

You are welcome, either a lens shade or changing your position to take the shot should remedy the problem

Were you just taking a photo of an empty field?

Due to the fact that the overall lighting seems to be of an overcast day as well as the way the artifact travels diagonally across the upper left side of the frame, I truly do not believe it is lens flare. This is normally caused by shooting into a very bright light (such as the sun) and reflecting across the surface of the lens. Were these the conditions when you took the photo? I have included one of my images that demonstrates this. Notice that the bright light source is in the frame in this case. Use of a lens hood would not have made a difference here.

I am also curious what your subject was. An empty field seems to be a bit boring as a subject IMO.

It was the field where I played little league baseball. I took a series of pictures that day. No other pictures had the white area like that. I've experienced lens flare before. But nothing that looked as unusual as this. I guess everything just lined up to make for a strange picture. That's a great shot you included.

Were you shooting on a tripod? Using remote or timed release? Could be light leak through the viewfinder.

I took this picture two years ago and I have no explanation for what it is. I use a Canon SX10 (1/640, ISO 200 and aper 5.7). There was nothing in the field when I took the picture, but this is what I got. I'm a little hesitant to post because I don't want anyone to think that I did anything other than take a picture. This is straight from the camera. I posted on Facebook last year and it got pretty interesting. What do you think it is?

Looks like Bigfoot.

I don't think you'll ever find out what it is. Another mystery unsolved.

If you are talking about the grayish object in the background where the field meets the tree line I would ask a question. Was this photo taken below the Mason-Dixon line? If so I'd say it looks like a disciple of David Dukes.

It has every characteristic of a man in a blue jumpsuit carrying a bucket or something similar, perhaps spreading seed. Thanks for posting!
