Tell that to my AE-1, my T90, my Zenit E, and my wife's Nikon FM2n.

Not 100% behind your thinking here, Boris! I SNAP images, my camera's have always exceeded my abilities and I don't mind admitting it. My 60D makes a better version of the same scene than my G16. Bigger sensor, bigger glass. But while one doesn't take a 'better picture' than the other, it does, however, improve the quality. Whether those images are any good or not I leave for others to judge.

There really is a true compliment for you there. People say that to make themselves feel better about not being able to take such wonderful shots themselves. "It MUST be an expensive fancy camera, otherwise I could take one just as good with my point and shoot!"

You never know what a person is thinking. Yesterday I went shopping with my wife. Had my camera, for you never know whats available to shoot. Went is a shoe store and 2 separate sales persons said "I like your camera" (a digital SLR with telephoto lens and hood). Apparently they had a passing interest in photography and the camera drew their interest.
Don't know what brought on the conversation, but made me feel good to "talk photography"/ Shouldn't matter why it came up. Enjoy the moment.

IMO: Folks who say things like this mean it as a compliment and don't generally understand that skill is important as well. You may add a comment such as:"...glad you like it. It took me a while to get it the I wanted it." It may turn out to be a teachable moment😊
