Well said. Anyone who doubts that should take a hard look at McDonald's and the new ordering kiosks. We have 6 McDonald's location here in our area. All have installed those kiosks. They market them as a customer convenience, but fact is that it does not speed up your order, but it does replace the person who used to take your order. Automation is a huge threat to unskilled labor. So those demanding $15 per hour just may find themselves replaced by a "machine".

Yep! It’s kinda scary.....these jobs were never intended to be “lifetime” or “single support family” jobs. However, as they became so and people started demanding more and more out of them it just created a demand for easy automation. The end result is a permanent loss of entry level jobs for workers just entering the workforce.

And they probably get your order RIGHT.

Yes, I saw that too. The Walton's have never demonstrated concern or caring about anything other than increasing their fortunes.

Seems to me if that were the case they would have pocketed the tax windfall and not handed out millions of dollars in bonuses.

Apple certainly seems to think so. How else do you justify a $630 profit on a $1,000 iphone X?

After getting a huge tax break and raising wages, Walmart is closing sixty Sam's Club stores. Taking thousands of people off their payroll will more than make up for the increase in pay.

The Sam's Club in Seabrook, NH is on the list for closing. Bummer. I will miss that store for sure.

How in the hell is this screwing the little guy? If you don't want a $1,000 phone don't buy it. If you think Apple makes too much profit, don't give them any of your money. If you like the iPhone X and it does what you want it to do and that is worth $1,000 to you, why do you care how much it cost to make it?

It's no secret Apple has a high profit margin and buying their stuff is a choice - nobody is putting a gun to your head.

Good grief .........

Yep. That's how business works. I don't know one single business that is not in business to earn a profit.

Generic Apple comment.

I have a friend that is a pastor (small town - not a mega church $xxx, xxx salaried pastor) he bought stock in Apple when it was selling for next to nothing. Today his 401k is at a little over $1.4 million and a large part of that is from the years of owning Apple stock. Interestingly, he does not own any Apple products.

This example is Apple not screwing the little guy - this is Apple doing what it supposed to do, make as much profit as it can for it's stock holders. A concept lost on too many people. Apple owes it stock owners it's best efforts - and so does every other company. (best efforts encompasses a lot of factors - profits being one of them). The individual that gains from stock ownership can take their money and give it away if they want to, who cares.

Agree. I have a lot of Apple stock. In the way I’m getting my Apple products at no cost because of the profits I’ve made in my Best Buy than Apple. I have more cash than any company in the world.

LOL! I work for a non-profit - a hospital - they provide a needed service like the police, fire dept., schools. I volunteer at another non-profit that provides guardianship services for people with debilitating physical/mental conditions, also a non-profit. They differ from other similar service providers in that they don't have stock holders and therefore they don't have "profits".

Yet somehow, maybe I was brought up and educated differently, I am not envious of companies that make a profit. Quite the opposite - I cheer them on because those companies are what my retirement investments are - I just wished the all had 24% profit margins ....

Kudos to you!

Let’s all remember, though.....not all businesses have stockholders. In fact, the vast majority of businesses don’t have stockholders, they have owners. I would also note that, to an extent, not for profits are in business to “make a profit” in that they must get funding from somewhere.....people with money, grants, businesses with money, etc. to continue to perform their services.....and their “profit”, if you will, is their value (perceived or real) to their mission.
