After getting a huge tax break and raising wages, Walmart is closing sixty Sam's Club stores. Taking thousands of people off their payroll will more than make up for the increase in pay.

Is the raise really the reason for closing so many Sam’s Clubs?
I have heard over the months now that Sams was going to close some of their warehouses. Personally I think Amazon is putting a hurt to all these big stores. Good bye Sears for example.

Both of their Rochester area stores are closing. Costco opened up here not long ago and BJ's has been established here for years. Could be they couldn't keep up their market share. I never shopped there as I always preferred BJ's.

Those being closed are consistently underperforming stores, and their closure has been in the works for some time. The action has nothing to do with the new tax laws.
Walmart is in business to make money, just like any other business.

It is faulty thinking to blame the tax cut and bonus to employees for the store closings. To opine otherwise may indicate you are a victim of the liberal spin doctors. Walmart is in business to make money with or without a tax break. Sam's Club stores never had the right atmosphere and certain features that Costco presents. Compare Costco and Sam's who have the same basic business plan and Costco wins especially with the quality of staff. Sam paid minimum wage, Costco much more and they attracted "people persons" and not the dead heads at Sam's who let you know ringing up your order was a bother.

Thank You - a factual answer as opposed to an emotional response.

I also don't think the tax break was a big deal or determining factor. I do think the poor performance is a major contributing issue along with Amazon getting bigger. In our area the Sam's Club store is being converted into a Walmart fulfillment center another sign I think Walmart is attempting to compete with Amazon. But in the long run terrible if your the one losing your job.

That is a good point. And possibly and most likely why I prefer Costco over Sam’s. For some reason I also like the way Costco is laid out better. There’s even a bit more room.

There are people out there who are so Anti-Trump they can't look at a positive thing like bonuses, raises etc. and find a way to blame Trump in the process.

Jerry, the store closings will not offset the raises at all. When those stores close, the sales revenue will go down in those areas. It is obvious that those stores were not profitable. No company closes stores that are profitable.

Another point to mention is that several of the stores are being converted into "Fulfillment Centers" as previously mentioned & some of those employees will be employed there or offered positions in other locations. Plus as also mentioned, these were underperforming stores which had previously been targeted for closure long before the tax bill.... ABC news is simply exaggerating the storyline for ratings purposes.

Amazon is the reason for the demise of Sears?? Their decline was well underway in the 80's.

I would say that stores like Wal-Mart and Target were the primary reason for the demise of Sears. Amazon is just helping them out a little. The big box stores will have to learn to compete with on-line sellers in the long run and the fulfillment centers is one area where Wal-Mart is hitting back.
