Vuescan. It will let you do more things than the manufacturer's software in many cases, and it will let you use almost any scanner ever made on the newest OS.

I use VueScan and SilverFast, both in 64 bit versions. Not interchangeably, but depending on the film I'm scanning. I've run side-by-side tests, and the algorithms for the applications vary a bit.

What is the best software for flatbed scanners?

I've had many scanners and used all the software that has been mentioned. For my current Epson V500 I just use the bundled Epson software which meets my needs. If you have an older scanner that may not be supported in Windows 10 then Vuescan works great to make that old scanner work. I also have a Nikon 5000 film scanner that was last supported in Windows XP but works fine with Vuescan. I also have Silverfast for that scanner that gives me a lot of options for scanning slides including support for my auto slide feeder. Some Epson scanners bundled a copy of Silverfast SE which works fine. If you did not get Silverfast bundled then it's fairly expensive to purchase and is linked to your scanner model which means it will not work on another scanner of a different make/model.

I have an Epson perfection 1650 photo scanner. It is an older scanner but still a good scanner. However, some of the features of the scanner are not supported by the OSX (Mavericks) of my MAC computer. I will be upgrading my IMAC to High Sierra next week. I would like to know if Vuescan and Silverfast will work with my scanner? Are there any updated drivers for my scanner? I have not been able to find any so far.

According to the Vuescan website it should work on a Mac. Not sure about Silverfast.

I've successfully controlled scanners from edit programs - to them, its just another form of input, and costs you nothing extra.

The software that comes with it is the first place to start. The Epson driver usually has several modes, such as Office, Advanced, and Professional. Higher end scanners often come with a third party package such as SilverFast that has even more advanced controls.

VueScan is third party software that supports an enormous number of scanners. It's a free download for testing, but you need to buy it to remove a watermark.

SilverFast is great stuff, and has been bundled with select Epson scanners for more than a decade. Yes, it works fine on a Mac.

I used an early version of it on a Perfection 3200 to scan 10x8 Portra 160 film negatives back in the early 2000's.

I've used both Vuescan and Silverfast. I settled on Silverfast.
