If the scanner is new enough to support your computer OS then it's the software that came with the scanner.

The Epson Perfection 850 flatbad scanner comes with Epson's own software, as well as SilverFast software!

Definitely Vuescan. One program that's worth the Money, If you have any problems just email the Author.
