I was there last September. No problem taking pictures. I'll attach a couple. We thought the last picture was really funny and had to take a picture of it. What do you think it is saying? LOL

Nice pic’s!
My cousin was a chaplain there in the 80’s.
Shouldn’t be a problem photographing the chapel.

I was there in May and could take photos anywhere in the Chapel. I believe in 2018, there is going to be major improvements to the Chapel especially the outside. I have attached a link to my webpage with photos from the Chapel.

You are absolutely correct - starting sometime this year there will be major renovations to the Chapel. As I understand it, the Chapel will be encased in scaffolding. Not sure when this will start. There is a visitors center at the Air Force Academy and they can give you all the info.

Was at the Academy in Colorado just last summer.
Only entrance is the north one for visitors.
Don’t pay any attention to all this nonsense about asking permission
and such.
The chapel is open to the public along with the visitors center.
Both are very well done and also a short movie you don’t want to miss.

I am not sneeking in. I am told major renovations will start in a week or 2. Will be going Sat AM. Love your photos TonyF. That is what I would like to get. Hopefully will be easy to wheel my Dad around. Taking a 1939 Leica 111 that a dear friend gave me for Christmas and full frame dslr. Thanks for the info! PKFISH

Before anything, if this is on base, consult the public affair officer. They may not be all that thrilled if someone sneaks in w/o their knowledge or consent. This is what I do when I go on base with the intent to take any picture.

I would love to see you try to sneak onto the Air Force Academy!
You would be in the jail house so fast it would make your head spin!

No problem photographing one of the most popular tourist attractions in Colorado. Lots of wedding photography there.

The chapel suffers from cutting corners (particularly for water proofing) during construction. During the summer there can be 40 degree temperature swings causing the aluminum siding to contract and expand. You can hear it creaking.

My cred: my wife and I shared our first date at the Chapel Dedication Ceremony on September 22, 1963...but we did not marry there.

Has anyone been in the chapel and taken pictures? My sisters husband has a friend that works in the chapel and is willing to show me around. I was wondering if there is anything in particular that I should look for . Any special angles ,time of day, special lenes, etc, or anything I should do besides being respectful. I am taking my 87 year old father . I hope he enjoys it. Thank You all for any help.

As an ex Air Force photographer (cerca 1960's), I would suggest that you make contact with the base photo lab for advice. The base photographers should have experience photographing the chapel and can advise you on the best angles, etc. Also, the Information Officer can advise you on the rules and may even help out in other ways such as providing a knowledgeable escort or other information that may help you plan ahead.

In any case, I would take a super-wide lens if you want to capture the full impact of the interior.

When I was there about 6 months ago, they are starting a renovation program for the chapel. They have to number each tile of glass and panel of the church, so that after cleaning, they can put it back where it belongs.
It will take, I believe 2 years or more, so Check before you go.
Colorado Springs offers SO many beautiful sites and views. Garden of the Gods offers a lot of photo potentials.
Iv'e never had any problems photographing in the chapel, when there is not a service, pre or post 9/11. They will let you know about the chapels below the other chapels.
Park at Welcome Center and do a small hike around to the chapel.
Drink plenty of water, because of the high altitudes and climbing.

Thanks, PK. Hope the scaffolding that has been mentioned won't ruin what you can get.

I've been there. It's beautiful and it's open to the public unless they have a scheduled event.

It has been a few years but when I was there we had no restrictions in the public areas. The chapel is smaller than you might think and the stained glass windows are darker in the rear and get lighter the closer to the alter. A wide fast lens is better for the inside shots. Getting consistent exposure on the light coming through is a challenge. It was a challenge to get far enough from the chapel to get it all in so the wide lens will help there also. Outside the chapel are statues of key aviators. At the North Gate, there is a B52D Stratofortress. It is special as it was the only B52 to shoot down a Mig 21 during its service in Vietnam. They had to clip the wing tips to prevent the wind from lifting the plane. Of corse you will be close to the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. If you have the time, take the clog railroad to the top of Pikes Peak. Lots of photo ops.

I don't see where there could be a problem taking photos of a Chapel at the Academy. If you were taking photos of Stealth Bombers on the Runway, at another base facility, you could indeed encounter a problem with Base Security.

The little guy is a little early to be a Cadet. It is an admirable goal for any young man or women. I’ve been there many times, my daughter graduated in the Class of 2000.
The Cadets you meet there are an example of our finest and best.
