I have found when I upgraded with Apple I didn't lose the photos necessarily but I lost access to them through the previous version, and had to go to image capture and or my back up drive to load them into the newest and latest version to view and print them. I definitely regret buying an Apple if it weren't for the 4K and the amount I spent. I would definitely go back to a PC, as everyone I've spoken to doesn't have near the problems I've had.
Well, you’re definitely in the minority. Most go from PC to Mac and wonder why they ever put up with Windows.
I use both, and have for decades, but only use Windows when absolutely necessary.
Interesting to note, when you upgrade to High Sierra on an SSD based machine, like most if not all MB Pro's from the last few years, the file system is converted to APFS - there is no way to opt out. On some future update the rest of the system will be converted as well. It's a neat file system and scales on everything from the Apple Watch through every product up to the Macs.
It's also important to note APFS volumes can NOT be read by older versions of the OS (its rumored that Sierra can read them though).

Is this just true for laptops or is it true for SSD desktops also? With the advances in SSD over the past few years, I am considering replacing my iMac HDD with one or more SSD’s. Thank you.

As I understand it, any system that was entirely SSD based was converted and the rest will be converted with a future update. I only bring it up so folks are aware, it's a good update that implements things like COW and other tech that makes the FS more stable and fault tolerant - long overdue.

Perhaps, when you become more acclimated to Apple, you will feel differently. As a four year convert, I couldn't be happier, and I would never go back. I also use Windows, but only when necessary. I have upgraded several times since Mountain Lion without any issues.
I downloaded High Sierra on my iMac with no problems.

The previous posts about AFPS and COW and SSD vs HSD may as well have been written in Urdu. That’s one of the things I love about my Macs; I don’t need to know that stuff.

Exactly! You don’t have to know. COW means Copy On Write + when you save a new version of something it writes a new copy somewhere else on the drive and once it’s confirmed successful it forgets about the old version. The point is they are doing it right and it works better for us.

My upgrade to High Sierra was effortless. Great operating system! Wonder what else might have caused your loss of data?

Sorry largobob, chemo brain, this comment was to the person who made the comment about those of us with Macs being lemmings. Will try again.

I thought Macs were foolproof and would never do something so malicious. Shame on Apple for not protecting the lemmings that own Macs.
