Clearly something went horribly wrong. I upgraded not to long ago and it went smoothly with no issues. Hopefully you have a backup system in place. Good luck.

Are you saying you didn't have your photos backed up?

exactly why I'm waiting on upgrading. I'm designing a backup system and until that is in place, nothing is getting upgraded on my iMac.

No problem here. Do you have an external hard drive backup?

What photo software? Time machine backup available? No problems for me either...

Total system crash last week. Not High Sierra. Complete back ups of everything kept it from being a nightmare. Had to reboot from a mirrored start up drive than reload the operating system. All worked because of backups. Are you sure your photo files are really gone and not just your storage info. (Lightroom or iPhoto or whatever) Losing everything seems almost impossible unless your hard drive bit the dust. Good luck.

What specifically does that mean, you downloaded it on your desktop? Did you install it? Fresh? Overwrite?

Also....What photo file?

your LR catalog?

A folder was deleted?

You can't find them?

Something is fishy.

Downloaded on iMac desktop and when I opened Photos it was empty. I do have an external drive but it only had up to 2015 on it. I believe the images are on the hard drive but I’m going to have to take it to Apple and have them retrieve them.

While you’re there pick up a 2+ terabyte external drive and dedicate it to Time Machine backups. So long as it’s connected you’ll have snapshots about every 3hours and you can easily restore to any point. Get usb 3 even if your Mac only has usb 2. Someday you’ll upgrade

A couple of questions:

1. Did you just download a DNG file, did you open it and did you install it?
2. If you downloaded a dmg file, where did you get it?
3. Did it cost anything?
4. What kind of computer?

Simple questions; your answers may speak volumes!
