Politics and everything else aside, I started watching Cassius Clay on the Wide World of Sports when I was a sophomore in high school. Fortunately it would come on after I'd get home from my J.V. baseball game and I could catch his fights. He was like nothing we'd seen before, even before he became champion. He was quick on his feet and just as quick with his hands. The Ali-Frazier fights have to be three of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time between two of the greatest champions. Joe Frazier was scary as heck. George Foreman, too, was as hard a knock out puncher as there was. Don't knock the rope a dope, Ali took terrific punishment from Foreman until Foreman just tired out. Why Ali never went down for the count I'll never know. I've seen Marciano and he just was not as well conditioned as Ali was. I think it was the time. Had Marciano trained 25 years later, it would have been different. However, despite the losses, etc., considering the fighters he fought and beat, I'd have to say that Ali is the Greatest.

Clay sucks ass, another pos draft dodger.

Jack Jackson could have beat Marciano, but nobody ever talked about him during Marciano's time.

I saw both fighters, one was a brawler, the other a boxer. Both were great for the era's they fought within. Note: Ali didn't dodge the draft, he claimed CO status, took a lot of heat for his beliefs and was vilified by the politicians.

In sports I'm totally color blind. I think a person's ability should be the discussion, not his color, beliefs, or anything else. Perhaps not the greatest fighter of all time but my favorite was Sugar Ray Leonard. He held titles in 5 weight classes! His greatest fault was staying around too long. He should have stayed retired rather than un-retiring a couple of times!

Society doesn't look far back into the past when looking for great popular heroes. We generally look for people we remember seeing. I remember Rocky Marciano and Rocky Graziano from when I was a kid, but I'm 73 now, so he's not exactly a household name. And why should he be? He was a prize fighter, an entertainer, not a national savior.

Jerry, He is also a part of this Country's history; something that todays younger generations hears very little about.

In all these discussions, I fail to see the name Joe Louis mentioned???

Amen, Joe Louis besides being perhaps the greatest heavyweight, was not a braggart like Ali (nee Cassius Clay). Louis showed quiet humility without being obsequious. He also did not refuse to serve his country. I was a huge fan of Joe Louis and also a great admirer of Rocky Marciano for their skills in the ring and Americanism outside of it.

Any of the above mentioned could have whipped our butts so lets enjoy what they did. Why argue about something that can't be proved.

That's just it. Times change. If you go back and look at Louis and Marciano's style of boxing, they couldn't have lasted in the days of Frazier and Ali. Why? Because of everything that the trainers learned during the eras of Louis and Marciano. The real fight that I would like to see would be Marciano and Tyson. In fact, I'd like to see everybody face Tyson in his prime while D'Amato was training him. The other name that hasn't come up is Holmes.

Ali was very good along with entertaining. I saw him come into some fights not in terrific shape.Rocky always came in the ring in top shape. Several of his opponents stated that Rocky was the strongest puncher they ever fought. Both great fighters, two different styles. I liked them both, but my being raised in Brockton, Rocky is my favorite.

As in all sports it is very difficult to compare competitors of different periods to determine which one is the 'greatest.' I personally don't think it really matters which boxer or ball player was the 'greatest.' Every pick will be challenged by some one that has a different favorite and many reasons why that choice is the greatest.

Marciano was great during his period because he was the champ then. Ali was champ during his time and even with a five year interruption, and so on.

He'd do the Ali suffle and other fighters just didn't know what to make of it and when he was finished he'd follow it up with a solid right.

Gorgeous George was the prototype "braggart". It was calculated, he discovered an outrageous persona would get bums on seats to see him get whipped. Many entertainers and sports stars have used this simple ploy to make a lot of money.

Many others, like me, didn't follow boxing much before or after Ali. The tragedy and cruelty of boxing is these poor bastards hanging on for that last big payday, well past their prime. Ali became an international icon, bigger than the sport itself. For those still fighting the cultural wars, this is intolerable.

Reporter ... "Cassius, I just saw Sonny Liston outside."

Cassius Clay ... "Ain't he ugly?"

Reporter ... irrepressible laughter.

Don't you have better things to do than post meaningless drivel. A computer generated fight had Marciano beating Ali.

I wouldn't give that fight much credence, it was probably run by those crooked climate scientists we hear so much about. lol
