Well, I just shot a roll of ektachrome yesterday on a Kodak Vigilant Junior. I also still have, and use, a Mamiya 645 (first gen), a Nikon N90s, a D-70s & D-200. So, I am not throwing stones.

I am in agreement. I never objected to a person who bought old or new. If my opinion was asked I answered. We are all different, some want the latest and "best" while others buy what they can afford. It is fine with me in both cases.

Just a rant! I don't understand some why people want to steal the joy of other people when they talk about the new or old piece of camera gear they purchased. If it was a older camera boded or an older lens maybe it was all the person could afford to get into photography. I think as a group of people interested in photography we should help people instead of making them feel bad about their equipment. Help them get the most out of what they have, to point out the best aspect of the lens or camera. How to set it up to get the best performance from what they have.

Let's be kind to people you never know how your word affect someone.

Thank you for posting that, Gary.

So many kind and helpful people on UHH, but it takes just a few smartass rotten apples to ruin my morning.

If this were one of the FB groups that I administer, those apples would have been removed.

AGREE. Your point on for sure. I always recommend used equipment to others that do not need the top of the latest line. And when money is concerned, they get the camera and not feel bad about it. Great comments and will continue to do just that.

I wondered if some people fully understood how one has to humble one's self to post as a beginner on a forum filled with experts, pros, and photophiles. I also know there are those who hoard camera gear thinking they will impress. All of my gear is entry-level and so am I, though I have had a few bridge cameras. So far most folks have been very kind and helpful with their responses to my posts, and I thank them.

I agree. The equipment is just a tool. Making good pictures has more to do with the knowledge and vision of the shooter.

Among all the BS rants we see on the internet, occasionally there is a gem that reflects a good light. Rant on.

I actually quit this forum for awhile because I'd see someone asking for lens choices and there'd almost always be several recommending a $1700 lens for the person's entry level camera. It seemed to be a often a snobbery thing and not very helpful. I teach digital photography and I'm quick to recommend the bang of the buck lenses like the 50-1.8s, 35-1.8, 17-50 2.8s, etc. I once had a Nikon 17-55 2.8 and tested it extensively against the Tamron 17-50 2.8 and ended up selling the Nikon and keeping the Tamron which I had less than a third the money in. I really enjoy using older lenses and exploiting the flaws of the weaker ones. I've been collecting old manual focus lenses from the 60-70s and adapting them to late digital SLR and mirrorless cameras. My favorite portrait lens years ago was a Canon FD 85-1.8 which had element separation on inner elements and produced the nicest portrait quality I've ever seen. In film days we looked for good ways to soften lenses for portraits and I've used everyting under the sun. The best thing I ever found was black tulle that I simply rubber banded to the lens. It softened highlights and retained fine detail in eyes and lashes. I paid $4 for enought to give everybody I knew some, and students for years. I've had some lenses so badly scratched on boith front and rear elements that I wouldn't have considered them useable. After testing them every way possible I've almost always been surprised how well they actually did. My advice to most: Worry less about equipment, and find groups and interesting places and projects to help you enjoy photography. I now teach continuing education classes after 35 years of credit classes. I'll never teach credit classes again. While my CE students come to learn and enrich their lives, too many of the credit students just wanted a grade, and I also felt hobbled by the state mandated curriculum. Just my take, your mileage my vary. Cheers! https://www.facebook.com/roddy.parkinson

The old adage, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar” remains true. Well said.

My dad used the expression “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar” with me a few times way back when. Since I was a smart ass teenager ... and just to get on his nerves a bit (in fun) I would say to him "sure Dad, but what am I going to do with a bunch of flies?". He never thought I was funny with that reply.

Well then we are likely of the same generation. I mostly heard it from my Mom. It's always been interesting to me how many such colloquialisms were & remain true. Now & then they serve their purpose.
