Just a rant! I don't understand some why people want to steal the joy of other people when they talk about the new or old piece of camera gear they purchased. If it was a older camera boded or an older lens maybe it was all the person could afford to get into photography. I think as a group of people interested in photography we should help people instead of making them feel bad about their equipment. Help them get the most out of what they have, to point out the best aspect of the lens or camera. How to set it up to get the best performance from what they have.

Lets be kind to people you never now how your word affect someone.

We should remember and live by these good thoughts.

My opinion. It makes some people happy to tell others, who share the same passion, that they have the latest and greatest. It's a harmless thing. I for am still using my 4 year old 7d. Do I want the 7dmk2 or maybe the upcoming mk3 yes, and I can afford either. but the 7d more than meets my NEEDS, and I would rather spend the $ on glass.

I enjoy hearing from, and am happy for, someone excited about a new purchase of camera gear old or new----even if the gear is superior to what I own.
And I am not a Prince of a fellow.

Me too--I have only seldom been able to afford (or chose to buy) brand new cameras and lenses. Recently I bought a 500mm Vivitar lens for Canon ($79 brand new), and some people pointed out that there are better lenses than that (for more than I ever paid for a car). But my need or use for 500mm is so limited and rare, that it would be nonsense to invest my meager life savings on one. Ebay was my marketplace for great stuff when nobody else sold it--especially large format. My first 4x5 cost me $125, and the results were so exciting that I never picked up the 35mm again.

I sold new cameras retail for 20 years, and sold very cheap to very expensive stuff--all of it had a legit market and appropriate users. It is especially gratifying to get top line high end goods for modest prices used, but of course we have to use some care (and knowledge) in buying. As a rule I don't buy from sellers who know nothing about the items (estates, etc.)--that way they can always claim they did not know it was worthless--unless there is a credible money back guarantee.

I was slow getting to digital, but use it regularly now. Even so, some of my finest equipment is old stuff, and some lenses that we don't call "the best" are still superb for certain things. I don't hesitate to use venerable old 5-element Tessars (for that Tessar look), or 4-element dialyte lenses, or 6-element plasmats and Dagors--or even a 3-element Geronar--instead of the latest 27-element zoom with dual exhausts and a musical horn. All of these can be used with my Canon 650D attached to the back of a view camera. I recently bought a 135mm Carl Zeiss Tessar that seems to be new old stock, never used in box, for $30, which I can use on a Speed Graphic for 4x5, or the Canon attached instead. No lens ever made can surpass the Kodak 208mm f7.7 in quality, which is great for backpacking because it is so small and light.

Note--I read a report online once that showed how the classical photo "look" is not because they used film rather than sensors, but rather because they had different lenses. When old lenses were used with digital cameras, they gave the classical look.
