A better metric, which camera do you see more of at sporting events?

When I went to the Masters last year the professional Canon photographers out numbered the Nikon by a 4-1 margin.

I have noticed that, by far, the majority of posts that mention the OPs camera mention a Nikon. Yet when looking at TV where there are photographers, there seems to be a lot of Canons. Is it just that Nikon users post more?

For one thing, they are working, not having fun - like most of us. Did they choose their gear? Was it supplied by Canon or the company they work for? Canon outsells Nikon, but lots of people buy Nikon cameras, and Nikon folks are very pleasant, friendly, and social folks. Not to imply anything bad about Canon shooters.

Two things.. While many different venues have a lot of Canon Photographers.. Nikon Photographers are there too. A couple of things to remember.. Not ALL white lenses are Canon. Nikon has a few and several of the lens (non- camera) manufacturers (such as Sigma etc. also have white lenses. That being said, I two have watched and participated in many different venues (race tracks, boat races, football, basketball, softball, fishing etc.) Yes there are a lot of Canon shooters, but there are also a lot of Nikon shooters, and many other brands. Nikon and Canon seem to represent about 90% of the professional shooters, and from experience and being at the pre-event photographer's meetings, I would say it was probably 60-40 split between Nikon and Canon and Nikon may lead some and Canon others. Spotting Canon lens users is generally much easier because they have CANON in bold letters on many of their long lenses. However, Nikon is well represented at most of the events. Also, remember that Canon also sponsors many sporting events and sometimes is involved in providing credentials. Personally, I don't care what camera the photographer is using as long as they are getting good shots. I have NEVER had an editor, publisher or other information provider ask me what brand of camera that I use.

On my vacation trip to NP’s in the west this fall, I saw about ten Canons to every one Nikon.

I have also noticed far more Canons than any other brand when I am looking at the TV during any major event - be it a sports event or some political convention, etc.

Professionals use Canon cameras and lenses. It's their job to be prepared.

Maybe Nikon users just have more questions or problems.

I know I think the naming of Nikon lenses seems very confusing to me as a Canon shooter. Yes, you may be able to use a Nikon lens from 40 years ago but you better make sure you have the right boxes checked and the right features on your body to make it happen. I would hate to have to try to explain it to a customer if I sold cameras. Among those older than 35 the name Nikon probably is more associated with cameras than Canon. But these are just my opinions...

Best,
Todd Ferguson
