R.G., I think you are right and I should crop a little from the right side. I did take some Haze out of it. I think I am just going to let it go as it is. I did it with cheap paper, but I have someone who wants to buy it, so any idea about the best type of paper to use; the picture is going to be large (for my thinking) 20 x 30. I can spend quite a lot, since I am being paid more than enough to cover the cost.

i think the water at the bottom, since it adds nothing, should be cropped off. Let the vegetation rest on the bottom of the frame. It will give a better balance between foreground and back ground.

There are others who could give more expert advice on the paper - my advice is that you won't go wrong with smooth paper. You don't want the texture of the paper spoiling the smoothness, because that's one of the things that makes the shot distinctive.

It doesn't look misty to me; it looks like smoke from encroaching fires. To fix that I would have slid the overall colors toward the blue. (And no, I don't live in the Los Angeles area but both my offspring do.)

I did take out the water at the bottom and I think I will try adding a little blue, but I kind of like the smog. R.G. I will take your advice and use a smooth paper, that makes sense to me.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ! Judges are people just like you. Any win in a competition is a matter of having a judge with taste like yours.

What you say is true. So, with your background in art, what do you think. Put yourself in the shoes of a judge.

BTW - IMHO you do very nice work!

Bill de, I showed dogs for many years, and I have learned that one day you may get a best in show and the next day be dumped by a different judge. Everyone has different opinions on everything! Life goes on.

I agree. I just figured if someone is going to post, why not give their opinion. We know everybody has one.

I like your shot very much. Won't change anything, if you do, the mood will change. The softness is befitting the fogginess. The only thing if you could repeat the shot, would be to have a bird flying in landing in the water. Its hard to suggest what, because each addition would change the atmosphere. Then the shot becomes something else again. Be satisfied you got recognition, and do more !

One more comment about so-called "layer cake" compositions that are not considered very strong. At one time this was the most expensive photograph in the world.

Nice shot. The controversy would be about the composition. Classic "layer cake" compositions are not often seen in photography except by amateurs and artists (witness Andreas Gursky's work). Maybe the judge was thinking how nice the earth tones look in a post-painterly abstraction type composition. In other words, I would think the judge leans more towards avant gardism than traditionalism in photography composition. You lucked out with the judge in this case. This pic wouldn't stand a chance in most photog. competitions.

I ran the image thru nearly all the PS Express pre-sets and none drew greater detail out of the background foliage nor the foreground. There must be too little digital detail in the image file. So no amount of Photoshop magic will work. What we see here is the limit the image can acheive.

For me it looks flat first of all. The color is dull and lack of contrast. Maybe PP you can revive it I don’t know? Good luck!

Kind of hard to do much processing on a 40kb thumbnail. Unless you got your hands on the original (I didn't see it posted) we can't really say nothing more can be done.

It is a bit bland to some. To others, it’s very relaxing and comforting. I always thought the art was selling it for such a tidy sum! I like it, but not enough to pay for it (even if I could). I do like layer compositions.

Not my kind of work I did not really like it either, but I sold it, so I guess I will do a lot more in that style. For me, I not proud, it is all about the dollar.
