The smaller dealers will always get your product faster. Unless you were one of the buyers pre-ordering on the first day of release from the big volume companies.
My D850 has a serial number of 3004XXX (placed the X there as not to give the specific serial number) and it came from B&H, does the 3 represent the region?

SN's are specific to the region. The Nikon USA SN's are now up to 14,000. I have no idea how many have shipped to the rest of the world.

The first two digits represent the region. 30XXXXX thru 39XXXXX is the USA. In case the numbering runs out then Nikon has backup numbering which starts at 25XXXXX. WHEN NEEDED. This lower numbering has been used several times on different bodies. This also makes identifying gray markets cameras very easy.
I ordered it from Adorama on Nov 7 and received it in Dec 4. But it is funny that I had called the week before and asked when it might arrive. They told me all the ones they had received that week from Nikon were “allocated” and I was not on that list. Nevertheless I got it next week. Maybe someone cancelled out or maybe it was because I told them I should be on the Nikon Proffesional Service (NPS) list but had not filled out all the forms with Nikon yet. (I hear NPS members get put at the head of the line).
Check Service Photo in Baltimore, I got on their waiting list in the last week of November and I received an email 7 days later that they had a D850 waiting to ship to me. I also found a battery grip on Amazon this week.
Fedex just dropped off one more D850 at the store, SN is 14,881. Pushing 15,000 units now! Too bad they only come in one or two at a time to us little stores.
Has anyone heard anything recent on how far the backlog is on the D850? Any idea when the most recent orders from Nikon were shipped and when they were placed?
Got mine in a week with free battery grip and adapter. Not sure where you live but in San Jose, California, there's a way to get the battery grip for free. You just have to time it right.

Once I placed my order, I got it in a week with battery grip & adapter. Not sure what form you're talking about, all the store asked for was my NPS number.
