I use a Canon 5D Mk II with my 50 to 500 zoom. A fast lens and it takes me from a normal close photo to those by being able to reach out and grab those distance pictures. It does have a tripod mount but I hand hold it mostly.

Interesting statement! I use Olympus Micro 4/3rds a camera system that is light in weight including their top-flight PRO lenses. Two photo below are made on the long end zoom HAND HELD! As you mentioned in your statement. LEICA Panasonic 100-400mm f4-6.3 = 200-800mm. & Olympus PRO 40-150mm f2.8 = 80-300mm f2.8. Both photos are made in live performance. Note photo caption. AP

w/Olympus M1 MK ll w/LEICA Panasonic 100-400 f4-6.3 at 400mm = 800mm f6.3 1/250 sec. ISO 400 Hand-Held
w/Olympus M1 MK ll w/LEICA Panasonic 100-400 f4-6....

w/Olympus M1 MK ll w/Oly PRO 40-150mm f2.8 at 150mm = 300mm at f3.2 1/250 sec. ISO 1000 Hand-Held
w/Olympus M1 MK ll w/Oly PRO 40-150mm f2.8 at 150m...

Okay people why can you all just answer a simple question without going into a long dissertation? For me a 300mm is the max I can handle. I tried my 300 with a 2x extender and that was to much. So for me anything over the 300 I will use a mono or a tripod.

A statement does not say much without a sample photo of what your saying. You claim a 300mm lens is long and safe for you to use hand held. I showed a picture of a moving boat in ocean water hand held at 800mm! And a photo of a young lady preforming live on stage indoors, NO FLASH ALLOWED!

These photos are easy to make live with digital cameras, not so easy with a film camera! AP

Wrong question. It's not about length. It's about weight.

I use the Canon 80D and the just got 7D Mark II with the Canon 70-300mm IS II and the Tamron 18-400, although I am beginning to think anything over 300 with the Tamron needs a monopod. Have on rare occasion hand held the Canon 100-400mm 4/5.6L, but needed a high SS to compensate. Really like the Canon 70-300mm IS II.

Pretty much the same mostly on my 5D, 40D and 70D, and it hasn't seen a lot of use on my 70D. (I don't own an 80D).
It's light and relatively small and good for those vacations where you might want a bit of reach, and are subject to tight carrry on requirements.
These two are from Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada and were shot using a Canon 40D

Very well done. Very sharp. No IS?

At what point, John ... do you decide to bring on the tripod?

Weight is proportional to length, in most instances, J ....

Not true. For instance, Sigma lenses tend to be much heavier than many other brands of lenses of similar reach.

AP ... thanks for sharing the pics to underline your point ...

However, sensors on MFT dig cams are HALF the size of FF dig cams ... so the weight of the lenses is significantly less ....

When comparing apples with oranges ... it would make sense to assure they're Honeycrisps ....

Norman ... when you add the 1.4x extender with the 7D Mk. II ... you are out to 896mm (FF equiv.)

So, when you use the extender, you also resort to the tripod, do you?
