Please indicate, up-front, in your response, whether you use a FF dig cam, a crop-sensor one, or you use a Micro 4/3rds system. Thanks ....

D7500 with my Sigma 150-500... no problem (though now I mostly use the Tamron 18-400).... My iPhone 6s Plus is pretty comfortable too..

Okay, Richard ... so what would it be, BEFORE you resorted to its use?

Well, now, MB ... that's like comparing a matchstick to a Butane Charcoal Lighter ...

The Tamron 18-400 has no tripod collar, right?

So, it's DESIGNED to be handheld ...

Can't say the same for your Sigma 150-500, can you?

Same lens on either your FF EOS 5D or on your new APS-C EOS 70D - right, Richard?

Does it feel more comfortable on one than on the other?

Pretty much the same mostly on my 5D, 40D and 70D, and it hasn't seen a lot of use on my 70D. (I don't own an 80D).
It's light and relatively small and good for those vacations where you might want a bit of reach, and are subject to tight carrry on requirements.
These two are from Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada and were shot using a Canon 40D

Nikon D7100 with battery grip and 80-400. Stance is vital!

Any of them. (except for the ridculous specialty lenses like the Nikon and Sigma super-de-dooper telephoto lens (both of which are cartoonishly big).
The real question is for how long?
...and as for ensuring no blur, shutter speed cranked high enough will cover any of the shakes that may set in :-)

...I use a monopod with my long lens as I get tired of holding it while shooting sports (always ready at eye-level).
Birding - hand held by my side and pull it up when needed.
Tripod? Only when shooting baptisms from the balcony and zoomed into the dunk tank !
