Greetings,
I have been lurking and following this forum for a few years now and have learned a great deal from you knowledgable men and women. I use a d5200, which I love, and desire to round out my lens collection with an ultra-wide angle. Which would you acquire and why? Thank you very much in advance. I love this forum.

Paul

When I compared the Nikon 10-24, with the Tokina 11-16, and the Tokina 11-20, as well as others from Sigma and Tamron, the choice fell in favor of the Tokina 11-20. Got it used on eBay for $395. It was bought new in Jan 2017.

I read reviews at Lenstip.com, as well as watched several reviews on YouTube. The 11-20 has the best performance regarding sun flares and other reflections. And it’s an f/2.8 which I wanted for low light situations.

Now that I have had it for a bit more than a week I’d say I got what I expected. A very good wide angle lens.

I am not familiar with the Nikon 10-20 but I am with the Tokina 11-16 and I know it is a great optic. It is fast at f2.8.
I guess that if you need more than 11-16 your choice is Nikon. I am perfectly happy with my Nikon 12-24 f4 AF-S but I would use a Tokina and would be happy also.

I have the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and it focuses sharp as heck on both D7200 and D500. Mine is an earlier lens without an autofocusing motor, so on your camera you would have to manual focus; however, with an ultrawide lens like that, you are focusing to infinity at about 6 feet, so manual focus is a no-brainer.

I looked at the Tokina and loved the build quality and 2.8 aperture. I didn't care for the very limited zoom range. I elected to buy the Nikon 10-20 and have been extremely pleased with it. I was concerned about the plastic but it hasn't been an issue. I accidently dropped onto Utah rock but no damage occurred. It is silent, fast focusing, excellent IQ. The ultra-wide isn't my go to lens so concerns about the plastic mount have lessened. I found the zoom range worked very well on my d7100 for numerous opportunities outdoors. The light weight also meant it went along more often while hiking than did some of my heavier lenses.

Good luck with either. You really can't go wrong.

I wonder if the first responder who said the Tokina was sharp but didn't like the focus had an early version with no motor. I don't think the D3300 has a motor in the body.

The D3300 does not. I was thinking the same thing.

You should have a look at these lens comparisons. Tamron and Tokina perform extremely well, and appear to out perform Nikon except at f 5.6

I have the Nikon 10-20 that I use with my D7500. It does what I want it to do. Are there better lenses for that? Probably but it does just fine for my needs.

I will point out that the Nikon 10-20 is an AF-P lens, and as such you will not be able to control the VR on/off when it's on your D5200. I actually like it without VR sometimes.

Get the latest firmware from Nikon for your D5200, but it still does not allow control of VR.
