No eating out, no trips, no buying anything for four months? Seriously, your serious here right? You want to spend $6400.00 on just the body. A couple of lenses would put you easily at $10,000.00. If indeed you buy nothing cause your mortgage poor. Why are you even considering this without robbing a bank. It all sounds very unrealistic. DXO scores prove me out.
And besides, the D850 is in a different class than the Fujifilm GFX 50S. They are different camera's altogether, meant for two different applications, they cannot be compared side by side. Therefore this post is null and void of any serious consideration of comparison.
Besides, you don't even own a car. If I were you I would lower my sites a little. Spending a minimum of $10,000.00 for something that will make you NO money would be a poor decision for someone who is MORTGAGE POOR. Your words.

Beautiful. I am Tammy. I do more family, and newborn photography. I am a Nikon geek. I have the D810, and the D5. What specific lens did you use for these pictures?

Thanks for the kind words everyone :)

Yes, the pics were with the D850 (7FPS, no grip at that point), and my 600 F4.

Here's the thing. Taking a big bulky camera on a cruise really get in the way of having fun. A point and shot just dont make it hither. But now.. what about a small camera that can keep up with the big one... well I think we found something here useful for vacations and there's time for both I know, but its nice to have the small one to slip into your pocket when needed knowing your going to get good photos with it and you can enjoy your time with family and not look like your working for National Geography.

Steve, take a look at the Pentax 645Z. It is slightly cheaper than the Fuji, and has many second hand both manual and AF lenses available at reasonable prices: macros, zooms and primes. It can also be hand held when the light is right and functions far more like a good DSLR. Read Ming Thein's three part blog on his use of it.
Pentax also makes adapters so one can use dslr and even the old manual 6x7 lenses. While I greatly admire the Fuji, at present I think the Pentax is an overall better camera.

I have but I still kind of lean towards the Fuji - although at this point, I'm not doing much in the way of landscapes and the D850 is working just fine for my purposes :)

This is the beauty of this website: put out a wild idea, and great people respond, and you learn a ton.

BTW: I have a car, just not in Boston. I don't need one here.

Sell the car, use Uber, cash in hand for new camera.

What will be your primary use for the camera? If it's landscapes then I would suggest consideration of the Pentax K-1. If it's action photography then probably something else, although the K-1 is better at this than some think. I use a K-1 almost exclusively for landscapes and it's a superb camera for that use and I doubt there is any DSLR that's better. I've also read two accounts by folks who own both the K-1 and D850 and they felt the K-1 was at least equal. You will hear that there is a scarcity of lenses for Pentaxes, thanks in part to DPR's highly inaccurate review of the K-1. There are plenty of good lenses for landscape use available. Every lens ever made by Pentax can be used on the K-1 and that's about 25 million lenses!

I can both sympathize and empathize with your need to consider finances - I'm in the same boat and that's one of the reasons I decided on the K-1 last year. I shoot thousands of landscape photos each year and haven't regretted getting the K-1 for a second. It's much less expensive than the D850 and not in the same universe monetarily with the Fuji. Another good camera available at a more reasonable price would be the D810 as these are available used for good prices since the introduction of the D850 and by most reports is better for action work than the K-1. Having the same sensor as the K-1 it's very capable, although I don't think it's processor is a good as the K-1's. You can find a great deal of info on the K-1 at www.pentaxforums.com.

If you're not going to use your new camera for landscapes then disregard everything I've said. Any of the camera's mentioned are capable of great landscape results. A new camera that a person really likes can bring a person great joy and I hope you find that, whatever you choose.

Steve, what I most like about the Fuji is that it is mirrorless, and thus lighter. The Pentax 645 has a huge heavy mirror, but the camera has a mirror lock up feature. This requires a tripod, but then for landscape work we use that. It is written by all who have used the 645 hand held that the in- camera image stabilization works well.

It is going to be my next camera. In the past (back when I was photoing dinosaurs), I had a Pentax 6x7 and loved it. Presently I use a Pentax K-1 and K-3. My partner is a Nikon person but jealous of my Astrotracer and Pixel Shift Resolution. Her images rival mine.

I recommend doing searches on the new FujiFilm medium format.
I'm waiting until Spring to make a decision... plenty of time to research this... and save money. No eating out, no trips, no buying anything and 4 months... how much can I save up? We never eat out, we never take trips, and I buy nothing anyways. I'm mortgage poor, folks. (My mortgage is killing me).

Come on girl...., STOP paying the mortgage and you'll have tons of money to travel!!! That's what I did!!! The fact that now I'm homeless gets inconvenient when it snows!!! LoL
Problem with Fuji, can you even get a lens for it???
That's the problem with all those, like Sony, Pentax, Pano etc!!! It's why pros use Canikon!!!

Depends what you're doing, tough to get shots like this with the fuji :)

Not really Steve, I just set up on a tripod in front of my computer and copy yours. Now I don't know if that new camera, the Fujifilm, has "anti-flicker" or not. Then I'll spend an hour or so with some kind of PP software. ....One hour gone by and damn, it just doesn't look as good as yours , but man I tried. So now back to my Canon 1DX MKII, say Steve, where did you say you shot these?

I agree, the form factor is what really attractive to me - I often hike into remote locations, and weight is everything :)

These were actually at a new place for me - Edwin b Forsythe NWR in NJ. It's actually a pretty cool location. As we were going though, the road went over a drainage pipe thingy that was flowing into the little pond area and these terns were going nuts with all the fish it was stirring up.

Was that the natural background shown in your shots? Or did you do something to change the background in PS? Just want to know why my backgrounds do not look nearly as nice and clean as yours, other than I just suck at it

I need a loan shark. I really want the D850. And 2 lenses, one zoom/MACRO, one wide angle.
I pay my mortgage every month. I guess I'll have to get a line of credit, but DH will be very, very angry.

Your DH is rightly be very angry because if you did that long after nobody wants the D850 any more you still owe the shark money.
