Visiting my Home Town, Chicago for Thanksgiving. I have a Nikon 5300 that really serves me well. I only want to take one lens with me on this trip. (Well, I probably will take my 35mm 1.8 with me that can fit in my pocket)
Most of my shots will be of Chicago skyline, buildings, lake front stuff. And obviously portraits of friends and family at dinner.

I do have a Nikon Nikkor 18-70mm F/3.5-4.5 G Aspherical ED IF DX lens, that I could use. But for the closeup shots, I would need at least 100mm in the zoom. So, should I be looking at a 18-105, 18-140?
The lens will obviously get a lot of use at home too as I walk around Atlanta.
Thanks for comments and suggestions.

Your 18-70 becomes an effective 24-105. I shot the Nikon 105 for portraits for over 20 years and at 24mm it's ideal for cityscapes. Advice given.

18-140 Nikon. 16-300mm Tamron, wider, longer reach.

A Nikon 24-120 f/4 would be great.

Not ideal on a DX body for the use intended by the OP.

After purchasing my Nikon DX 18-200 two years ago I carried it all over Europe on a one month trip for use on my D80 and have since carried it to fairs and on many hikes on my upgrade to a D7100. I cannot say enough positive about this lens and how it represents a complete bag full of lens in a single lens. Its not the lightest thing around; but, it isn't that heavy when you consider the alternatives. It is my go to lens, receives about 80 to 90% of the usage on my camera.

When I had DX bodies, I liked the 18-200mm. Good lens, good range, good price.

On my D5300 I just got a Tamron 18-400.
As long as you get bright light, its a great walk around lens.
Just took it to Iceland, and I never used my 10-20 wide angle.

I can only give you my personal opinion, we are all different.
With your APS body the 70mm side of the 18-70 f3.5-4.5 AF-S will give you a field of view of 105 mm. Isn't that enough as a portrait lens? Set it at around 35 mm. and you can make beautiful 3/4 portraits from your subjects.
As a walk around lens it is pretty sharp and the focal lengths it covers should give you a large proportion of excellent shots IF you do your part. In low light consider using flash or raising the ISO if you want to go with more ambient light.
I consider a great idea taking your 35 mm. f1.8 along since its angle of view is pretty similar to a 50 mm. lens with a full frame camera and that focal length could be very useful with your cropped sensor.
If I had to make a selection between the 18-105 and the 18-140 I would not hesitate buying the 18-140.

The Nikon 16-80mm f/2.8-4.0 would be an excellent walk around lens. You can get them refurbished from a Cameta Camera for $779.

Help yourself out here. Envision ahead of time the kinds of photos you want to take instead of settling for grabshots of most anything. Maybe a story to tell, a theme? Zooms give you a range of composition, so do your feet. That 35mm f1.8 could sure cover a lot of territory with a little forethought.

Some good advice here. I'm an m43 shooter now, but, shot Nikon for years. The 18-105 is one of two DX bargains in the Nikon line-up. Small, light and sharp.

I use my 18-140 the most when out and about. Excellent quality.

I took an 18-140 on my D5300 and a 35 f1.8 (used only once). The 18-140 stayed on the the whole two weeks. Happy with that choice.
