Interesting. I expected this just to be a quick "operator error" question and I could go on feeling clueless. But my d7100 has done the same thing a couple of times. It's never caused a problem but it could if I was on an extended photo shoot and wound up using up my cards faster than expected.

FWIW - Your expectations were most likely correct....if you follow closely when the problem occurs and look at what you were doing just before it occurred, you were probably making a change to a setting, possibly ISO, that did not change the ISO, but changed the quality setting... as in operator error, pushed the wrong button and turned the command dial...

Happened to me quite a bit - I shot in Manual mode and occasionally when wanting to change the ISO I mistakenly held down the QUALITY button and rotated the command dial...which switched from raw to JPG. I always wished Nikon would put a 3 finger lock on the quality settings that made it harder to mistakenly select when wanting to change the ISO.

I usually keep my image setting on my Nikon D7100 to RAW. But every now and than it is switching on me to RAW+JPEG. I don't remember change it and when I look at the menu screen of recent changes, I do not see how it is changing. Does any one any clue on what is happening. I main notice it when I view the pictures on the PC and see jpg images, which I usually (hardy ever) us.

Ziggy_nc: That use to happen to me when I would be in my bracketing shooting mode. Were you in the bracketing setting?

I have been using RAW only in my D7100 and so far I've never had it change on me.

So Ziggy if you were in bracketing, note that each time you leave the bracketing mode you need to reset to raw. I too have a Nikon D7100 and have learnt to do that after coming out of Bracketing

I've taken bracketed shots on numerous occasions to use for HDR and I so far have never had to change back to RAW. My bracked shots as well as all others are always in RAW.

I would echo the same here, never had to reset to raw after bracketing shots on my D7100...

I've never had this happen with my d7100. But then I'l have to admit that I've never hit the Qual button by mistake when changing ISO. I don't believe for a second that is a Nikon problem.

My grandkids do borrow my D7100 and they always change it to jpeg. I keep trying to have them keep it at RAW but have never been able to. The only other times is when in the dark I'm trying to change the ISO setting.
