What's wrong? $$$ and the $$$ accessories. Waited two months for the D850 and still no word on when the battery grip will be available.
Nearly $1K when you add the other parts needed to push it from 7 to 9 frames per second. $150 for a D5 battery, $90 for a charger, $25 for a battery chamber cover. And the cover for the flash mount they used to give you with the camera. Now $2 from Nikon plus "estimated shipping" charge of $7.50. C'mon, Nikon, you're pissing me off.

On a brighter note, since I was in the camera store anyway, a Tamron 150-600mm G2 followed me home. Reasonably light weight, snappy auto focus, great vibration control and weather sealed. That's the best match I've found for the D850.

FYI...(I am not sure if I stated this in this thread)...The D5 is my primary camera for sports action. For night football games, I use nothing but F2.8 lenses, and faster, including a Nikon 400/F2.8 E FL. Nothing else will fit the bill for that! The D850 is now my tag-a-long camera, hanging off my left shoulder, used when the action get too close for the 400. Normally, it carries the 70-200/F2.8E FL, but sometimes something faster and shorter. I was previously using a D500 for this, but recently replaced it with a D850. MY results are what matter the most to me, and I am very happy with this new combination. Normally I shoot wide open, using a set shutter speed (depends on the light available at the game, but I prefer 1/1000th for this work, and either use auto ISO if the lighting varies quite a bit, or on a set ISO. Everything varies by venue, time of day, uniform colors, etc.. Best of luck.

As soon as you start with D5 and f/2.8, you clearly state that my concerns have nothing to do with you.

You have an enviable set up, but not everyone has the means to be as decked out as you seem to be. Hopefully your sports photography is good enough to pay the bills for all your equipment.

Forgot to mention, the D850 shutter is pretty noisy, even in quiet or quiet continuous mode.

From the Nikon folks at PPEast in NYC a few days ago. The battery grip should be available very soon, a week or two at the most. I'm waiting for mine too. In my case, the battery upgrade was much less as I also have a D5. Your charger price is incorrect. The Nikon OEM version is $ 370. B&H should have the flash mount cover, but you may have to ask. Save the shipping. Best of luck.

I thought I pointed that out very nicely not to be abusive, but I guess you wanted me to be abusive.

Neither did I , even called you a Nikon Master. My first use of such a term. You should feel honored.

You could call me a fool for spending that much money on Nikon equipment with over $70,000 spent on Nikon (sometimes I wonder where my priorities are), but at 72 I figure I can't take the money (or hardware) with me so I just enjoy what I have.

I would respectfully disagree as it seems this discussion has changed to one about sports photography. I am a professional sports photographer, but I still do have an opinion. I, generally, buy what helps me in my work and try to consider my investments wisely. If I was not 'working', I would, most likely, not have the gear bag that I do. Best of luck to all!

Not sure about just how good it is, but people pay me to do it. Started 50 years ago, been a pro for about 30. I try hard to make most of my gear related decisions based upon what helps me produce the results my clients seek.

Not intentionally! You did say, which IS correct, that the battery switch, from scratch, costs @ $1k. The grip works for me for many reasons starting with giving me the same feel as the D5 along with being able to use the exact same battery for ALL of my cameras which is helpful if you're as busy as I am. I also much prefer to use the grip for vertical shooting. Thankfully, my entrance price was the cost of the grip alone. Best of luck. I hope we all see our grips in the next couple of weeks as indicated!

Now, now, Larry, watch your blood pressure; he’s only $312 high - pocket change for some (not me).

About sports, partially, but not at the level you are paid to do. I believe improved ISO “down the line” will enable more people to do what they want at a price within reach of more of us. That is why D850 may be relevant and D5 {twice the price} is not.
