Everything I have read about the 850 has been positive--the only negative is that it requires the best lenses. Even "the Angry Photographer" is impressed.
Where is the downside?

Wait a few months at least until you can simply order one and have it in a week or less.

Then, the downside is that one has to wait a few months to get one.

Would love to have this camera, camera and the lens not in the budget at this time.

Curious to see how that works out. Supposedly there are plenty of folks who are on multiple pre-order lists who will cancel their duplicate orders when they finally get one on the way.

Will the mirrorless cameras over-take it in Quality, functionality, and price? I'm saving my money for shopping in the Spring 2018. I'll do some comparisons then.

That would be bad for Nikon. First they couldn't deliver the cameras so they could get the money and then they could not sell as many as they thought because people cancelling orders.

I would imagine that they'll plan accordingly. Meanwhile the reviews are quite good! There a a couple tracking sites encouraging that method of purchase. Here's an example:

This rollout seems kind of typical. I'm sure the folks at Nikon are aware that people do multiple pre-orders. The folks who can't wait to get their hands on one are important for the rollout, but they don't make up a large percentage of the ultimate sales numbers.

Yes, they've had a couple years of practice!

Many were surprised that the price was under $3300.00

Wouldn’t expect to get the best pictures with the worst lenses!

Many new cameras often have a glitch or two when first introduced, and perhaps the D850 will too. But other than that why are you assuming there is a downside?
