I am an amateur photographer with limited experience in Photoshop. I have had Photoshop 4.0 many years ago but very limited knowledge on how to actually use it. I currently have LightRoom 6 and PS Elements 9 and considering upgrading to Elements 15 or PS CC. I am learning a lot know but not sure my monthly usage of the software would justify a monthly subscription vs a one time purchase. Any advice on which to purchase (PS Elements 15 of PS CC subscription) would be appreciated.

My opinion: Buy and use PS Elements and use it for a year. By that time you'll know if you need/want/require more. I've used Elements extensively and am very happy with it. It does all I need (and then some).

There are some very good books on PS Elements. I agree on the CC monthly fee issue and that is why I do not intend on uograding from my PS CS4 version. One has to have some artistic or commercial incentives to go full bore on PS (top version).

I have both. In ten years you'll pay $1200+ or more for cc. If you upgrade elements 3 times you will pay -300. If you are a pro cc is a no brainer. Otherwise elements is friendlier and easier.

That's kind of my concern. rent or own. I prefer owning something. I already own LR 6.
Thanks

My 2 cents worth :

If you already own Lightroom 6 you're all set for quite some time. Until you reach a personal limit with the software ( or camera ) that you now own there is no hurry to upgrade either. Although I'm very, very far away from being a professional photographer I believe that most of the post processing done, even by professionals, is done in Lightroom. Tell ya what to do... Go to the site ' 500Px ' and find the 10 most beautiful photographs you can find and I'll betcha at least 9 of them were processed in Lightroom. Lightroom 6 is just fine and dandy.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning toward cc but I think I can do anything I need to do with elements. I'll wait a little long to decide.

You can also buy Elements+ for $12, which gives you back some of the PS abilities..... And it's available for almost every version of PSE.

Elements has been 8 bit since it's inception, back when there was no 'online' anything.

Not entirely correct.

Elements (my version is 11) cannot save a JPEG as a 48-bit TIFF but it can open, edit and save a 48-bit TIFF without demoting it to 24-bit.

But I'm just a quibbling. I only use Elements for trivial work. I use Capture One and almost anything else to avoid Adobe CC.

I have been using CS5 since it was released. I never used it to its full potential. So I recently bought PS Elements 15 and Premiere. I have used Elements exclusively for a couple of weeks with the same results I was getting. The biggest issue I have with it is that some setting, like custom crop size, are not sticky. I'm not sure about older versions, but the organizer in v.15 is pretty impressive.

I also have CS5 and Elements 15. no real problems, except the the real Photoshop does some things that Elements can't.
But for most of my work, Elements is good enough.
Don't think that I want another monthly cost, so I guess that Elements is going to be my go to from now on.

Based on everyone's opinion I think I am going to go with elements. I would rather own than rent.

I think you will be happy with your choice of Photoshop Elements 2018. If your camera/smartphone shoots video, you may want to consider buying it bundled with Premiere Elements 2018. The bundle is not that much more, and both programs work well with each other and share the same Organizer catalog - the module that helps you manage your images/videos.

Have fun.
