Cameras are getting better in most ways. Focusing is fast and accurate, resolution is high, low light capabilities are good, etc.
How can cameras be improved in the future? Can we find some new functions for cameras or is future development only about lowering the price?

What do you think or wish for?

Super light weight and size.
What if you could get "big gun" performance from a camera the size of a matchbox and a lens that covered 8mm macro/ micro all the way to 2000mm all at f1.4 of course.

I am still catching-up using my Nikon D300/ Nikon D610, and Hasselblads (film backs). Lower prices would help!!

tradio beat me to it, But I was going to push for all lenses to be less than $200 each, and all f1.4 or less. Oh and weigh like 4 or 5 oz.

I think the ergonomics of Sony, Leica and other cameras have a long way to go. Many of theses cameras are like holding a rectangular slab in your hands. Nikon and Canon have been refining their cameras for decades.

I think the CMOS sensors used in digital cameras are probably at their limit in terms of image quality and dynamic range. An entirely new type of sensor would be needed.

Thanks for the comment. I am not asking about lenses, but cameras. I know it is still a long way to go to the perfect lens

Cameras can get lighter and cheaper, but they already seem to be doing so much cool stuff. I'd like them ALL to have peaking ability, in-camera panorama stitching, and slow motion video options.

Lighter, but probably not cheaper - Google, Samsung and Sony all have patents on contact lens cameras; Sony's apparently has autofocus, zoom, aperture control, and even image stabilization.

The main improvement in cameras will come from making them do what they now but better. Faster focusing, faster shooting, smaller, lighter. I don't expect built-in phones or radios, just better cameras. I'm sure there will be other developments like the movable LCD. If you had asked this question ten years ago, the movable LCD would not have occurred to me.

Being an Old Guy, I would like to see a camera with the res. shutter speeds of the D800/D810/ D850 without all the auto "crap" except auto focus (Old eyes here).This would greatly lower the price.
I am not saying the auto "crap" isn't good, but early on I found trying to set the auto features to get the images I wanted very confusing and frustrating, I have tried shooting auto got decent images but not exactly what I wanted. The two little wheels are my best friend 99.9% of the time.

A camera that is less auto and more basic. That actually sounds pretty good to me.

I think current systems can satisfy everyone's needs. Photographers a decade ago produced great images of all sizes without the benefit of today's technology.
But time will yield improved performance and/or reduced price. Most of the recent improvements in performance appear to be based on improvements in processor and storage technology. Moving mechanical elements of cameras (mirrors and shutters) appear to be reaching performance limits and are relatively expensive to implement. DSLRs will probably be non-competitive with mirrorless systems within the decade.

Connectivity is an area that needs improvement, wireless connectivity to be specific. Both Canon's and Nikon's wireless software has a lot of room for improvement.
