Could it be part of the future to integrate new functions into cameras, like different light spectrums, the possibility to use every camera to take IR photos, night vision, integrated polarized filters etc?

Thanks for the comment. I am not asking about lenses, but cameras. I know it is still a long way to go to the perfect lens

JPL, your right, you did, but 1 is no good without the other. ..??? re: camera improvement's should be in the sensor, and the computer? How about photo shop or other edits installed on the camera, plug it in to the computer so you can see it big screen, do most of your edits before downloading. The sensors are steadily improving, so how about improving ISO ratio to graininess? Like removing it without having to stack photos?

I know, cameras and lenses are very much related. I just want to focus on the camera part now. The discussion is often more a miss than a hit if the questions are general instead of specific. And thanks for your new comment.

Modular cameras! In other words, cameras which can be transformed from light and compact to bigger and more complex, and various stages in between. Every aspect of the camera can be altered by attaching a different module. There can be all sorts of special modules available, such as waist level viewers, multiple hot shoes, dual sensors, etc. Instead of buying a new camera to take advantage of the latest technology, you simply purchase a module that incorporates the new technology. The choice of modules will allow you to thoroughly customize your camera to best fit your photographic needs.

Someone recently filed a patent for a modular camera. And if I am correct Ricoh made one about 10 years ago with the GXR camera. I think this is an interesting idea.

A camera that is less auto and more basic. That actually sounds pretty good to me.

It's good like it is , as you can put it in any stage of auto or manual at the flick of a couple control buttons , if it gets to basic and less auto ,then a lot of new comers may find it to confusing to take a pic
tell theyou, learn the controls

Let the manufacturers worry about that. They will find something. Most do not use what they have now.

I would take the "Be like a smart phone" one step further - use the smart phone. For example, consider a Canon 5D Mark IV and Apple X. Add a fast interface between the camera and phone, eliminate the display screen, GPS, NFC, and other special hardware on the camera ... (use the phone hardware). Add a remote camera option and an app to the Apple X. The camera can still take pictures without the phone and the phone can still take pictures without the camera. The cost savings may be that you get the camera and phone for the same price as the original camera. If the camera has a slot for holding the phone, the new phone sensors can be used with the remote camera instead of the phones front camera.

The camera companies can concentrate on lens and sensors and the phones manufacturers have a solution for telephoto and low light images. Upgraded phones still work with the camera. Light room works on a phone today.

Super light weight and size.
What if you could get "big gun" performance from a camera the size of a matchbox and a lens that covered 8mm macro/ micro all the way to 2000mm all at f1.4 of course.

Hey, the lord created the world in six days and them rested and took fotos of his creation, in todays world anything is possible.

all good ideas and what about voice control for actually running the camera. The xfinity voice controlled hand unit does everything you want to do on the TV.

So why not incorporate a voice control to shift the focal length, the desired lighting and shutter speed to create the perfect foto?

I still like to play with the controls but a lot of folk would welcome an almost hands off approach to making great fotos.

some great ideas for sure.

Then they would have to be able to do these things and still keep the price in a realistic range.
