RMM's suggestion is right on, just make sure you're in AV, TV, M, BULB modes and set the camera for raw.

Read pages 64-66 of your manual
Set the camera as needed
Take some test photos
Copy the images to a folder on your computer
Open the folder with Windows Explorer
You should see 2 numbered copies of each photo
Look for the .CR2 extension
* If you do not have the option to see file extensions turned on you can right-click on a photo and choose Properties

If the .CR2 (RAW) photos are there then open DPP
If the files are not there make a call to Canon for assistance

I only shoot raw.
You need a card reader and Canon Digital Photo Professional to use raw.
I download with my card reader to a folder named Raw I then open these files in DPP. I edit them then save them to a folder labeled XXXDPP. I then open these files in DPP and convert and save the in jpg to a folder labeled XXXjpg.
I never never sav edited files to the raw folde. Tha is only fororiginal images.
I hope this helps.

You've got to be doing something wrong and I don't think anyone can really help you unless they can see exactly what you are doing. Take your camera to a good camera shop and ask someone to check if you're camera is set for RAW. If you're computer isn't downloading raw files that your camera generated, then the camera is not generating a raw file. Simple as that. When you download the images, first create a folder on your desktop and then download them into this folder (just one time as a test). This way you are sure to know exactly where they are. Look inside the folder with Windows Explorer. If you are shooting raw and jpg you should see two files with the same name different extensions if it's setup to view extensions. If not, you will still see two files with the same name and different looking icons. If you don't see this, then I know for sure that you don't have the camera set for both.

Any ideas as what to do???

Go to:

Choose the second option.

Are using Canon soft ware to down load with, if not if you use say picasa it down loads as jpeg. Use Canon EOS Utilities to down load with. This has been the only
way I have found to to down load RAW. I made the mistake lately of doing a major shoot and down load about two hundred picture of a shoot for a customer with out checking out every thing in Picasa. It down loads raw but converts to jpeg. I had ever picture twice in jpeg. I had delete those folder and down load with Eos utilities and I was alright. I have Photo Shop but I do not like the results I get from their raw program and do not like their organizer. If you use EOS utilities it will save them in your windows picture program in jepg. as well.

Try using Windows Explorer to navigate through the card, rather than the download folder. You should be able to see the card as a mounted disk. There may be several folders, so you'll have to wander around a bit. As already noted, you'll be looking for .CR2 files. If they're not there, you should contact Canon, because the problem is in the camera. If they are there, you can download them. CHeck Canon's website for firmware upgrades for your camera. I suspect repairing the camera could cost more than it's worth, and it may be time for a new camera body. One other possibility would be to do a reset to manufacturing defaults to see if that resolves the problem.
I have searched for .CR2 files but there are none on the card. I will try the factory reset when I am able to get my hands on the camera, probably later this week.
I have been thinking about buying a D7 when I next go on leave to the UK. Maybe this issue will put the squeeze on me.

I have finally solved the problem  I tried the various ideas proposed by you guys one of which was to google the issue. This directed me to another Photo Forum, where a member (HTH Carl Cotter) was advising another member on the same issue. His answer was slightly different to the manual instructions.
He said once you go to the quality menu and move the red box up to Raw + JPEG you have to then move the box over to the right using the cross keys on the back of the camera. This last point is not mentioned in my manual. Anyway I followed this and took a couple of test shots. Lo and behold it works.
Thanks a million to all for your time and effort to resolve this problem. I really appreciate it. SO nice to know that this forum is loaded with nice people.
