Is the inability to spell a reflection of IQ?

NO, but it is an indication of literacy.

Literacy - noun - the ability to read and write. Not the ability to spell. One can write without being accurate in spelling.

Some our greatest poets and writers had trouble spelling. Einstien for one. No it not a measure of intellect.

I will say this: I honestly don't think most members use the "review button" which could help them when rereading their statements and by so doing may find bad spelling as well as "really bad" grammatical errors. If they did use the review button, and reread their us of certain wording, they may look and sound less objectionable to others who try to read what they have stated and understand their meaning of phrases they have used. Yes, I use "spell check" and I do review the information I post. I don't claim to be perfect, just willing to try to make my spelling and sentence structure here on the forum readable and understandable.
Thank you for your indulgence.

Obama and Fox News have gone to war frequently during his three and a half years in office — most recently over a sharply negative teaser shown on Fox and Friends that the White House took as a Fox News-sponsored attack ad on the president.

The Obama Administration frequently used the network as a proxy punching bag for its Republican opponents in the early years of his presidency. Fox's personalities, led by Glenn Beck, fired back with more and more incendiary comments, but a somewhat delicate balanced was reached after the 2010 election in which both sides toned down their rhetoric.

The exchange, per pooler Mark Landler:

As he thanked the group for their support, one of them, Jeff Hawks, gestured to one of the TV's and said, "You're in a building that has Fox news on."

Obama suggested that Hawks ask for it to be changed. "The customer is always right," he said.

"I'll arm-wrestle you for your vote," Hawks said to Obama. "No, I'll play basketball for your vote," he replied.

This president has been such a delight. Policy aside, his wit and youthfulness has been most uplifting and rewarding. His sense of being a family man is second to none. If America had more dads like our president Obama, we be a far better country for it. He has handled the presidency with a great respect for this country, always moving with a calculating manner that shows that he 'gets it'. I'm really going to miss him come 2017.

I believe it is.... Sometimes I get tired trying to figure out what some of these people are actually saying. Then, on top of bad spelling, they don't use punctuation properly either.

When you finally get fed up with it, then you get someone who makes fun of you for knowing how to spell and use punctuation. What kind of response is that? Why not use the spell check and/or reread what you have written.

If you post it by mistake, there is always the edit button.

It IS Ohio, what would you expect? PBS? Not hardly they love their Fox News and Jesus and guns in Ohio. Did you know that Columbus, Ohio is the second capital of West Virginia? Ohioans have never been open-minded or forward-thinking. This is the state that gave us Warren Harding...

Come on, RixPix, I stuck up for you in another thread and now here you are running down Ohio, the wondrous place that I reside in. Just because the Reds, the Browns and the Indians are our sports teams, doesn't make us closed minded or backward.....just very tolerant of lack of high performance.

BTW, Jesus and guns are a good two out of three in my humble opinion.

Well, we have already covered the National IQ tests that don't penalize for spelling. Then someone mentioned, maybe me, that Einstein was a bad speller- Faulkner and a host of other great writers. It amazes me that we are, for the most part ,quite gentle in our evaluation of photographs on this board but when someone spells poorly the resident English Teachers come out of the woodwork. You know what I think? The "Grammar Correctors" have no other way of showing their intellect so they love to debase poor spellers!

....and we wonder why the U.S. is now showing poorly in the world educational standings.

If I were to be looking to hire someone for a job (and I have, many times, in the past) and saw spelling, punctuation and grammar like this, on their resume or job application, it would go in the "other" pile.

With no attention to detail, how do you (or your children) expect to get the high paying, technical jobs that are out there for the educated? Trust me, it's not going to happen.

If you can't do a simple thing like spell correctly, what other things will you let slide by?

My son works for Apple. Do you think publishers care about spelling. THEY DO NOT! If a writer can write , and not spell well, proof readers are a dime a dozen.

I see that we have an English teacher in the room, how nice, lucky us.

I agree with rocar7. There are far too many spelling and grammatical errors on many posts. Makes one wonder if the photography and PP work by these posters is as sloppy. It's simple to use a spell checker; it might help.

I teach history and writing at the university level. What I find is people use the computer like they speak when engaged in chats. They see no reason to worry about grammar and spelling because, as in conversation, one is not corrected in an informal setting. However, I find that when engaged in a formal situation they seem to pay more attention to the formal language. At least this is true among my university students. I do not expect a formal discourse on this site. Some have more formal education than others, but so what. The question is: are ideas conveyed?
