Would you rather have a camera capable of 14fps, or a camera with 51mp? ... Why?

Being a newbie to digital I am going to say I would take the 51 MP. My reason is this, I am still learning my camera, so I think it would help me more now.
The things I want to photograph at an astonishing 14 FPS I am probably not good enough yet to get set up before the subject matter is gone. I.E. the beautiful dragon fly I saw last week.
I have been shooting mostly on auto, because I wanted those particular images. But I am going to begin my manual training this week. I have 2 days set aside where I am going into the Nevada desert no auto shots. I hope I learn something.

Good for you, Chwlo ...

I'm sure that will be a very rich and rewarding experience for you ....

Take plenty of water with you, when you go ...

I agree timing (and luck) is the key to getting the magic moment.

If you're a landscape photographer, you would not need 14 FPS, and 51 MP is a bit of overkill, unless...

A 51 mp sensor might reduce the dynamic range a bit, 24-36 is probably optimal, unless you're doing really LARGE, COMMERCIAL, BILLBOARD sized prints as one other poster mentioned.

Wait until Sony figures out how to do 51MP and sells it to Nikon then the tune will change that anything less is crap and not worth buying.

Pochon ... fps - refers to the max rate of FRAMES PER SECOND - a camera will shoot ...

Typically - on any 35mm DSLR - it hovers between 3-5, or 5-7 ... some Sony do 10-12 ... the Nikon D5 shoots 14fps ...

MP - refers to resolution ... counted in MegaPixels ... lowest being around 12 on modern cameras, and 24 is now average ...

The highest numbers - such as on the Nikon D810 - are 36 and on the Nikon D850 - 46 ...

Sony a99II comes in at 42mp ... but the big leader in 35mm FF DSLRs is the Canon 5D S / 5D S R - at 51MP ...

Arch ... the recently released Sony SLT a99II is already at 42MP ....

I suspect Sony believes that to be optimum, now, for the lenses they have available ...

Can't see why they would add more than that at the present moment ... even THAT allows 10MP overhead ...

Interesting thread. I’ve wondered why the Nikon flagship D5 and the Canon 1DX Mark II are 20.4 and 20.2 MP and 12fps and 14fps. Now I understand.

I have my Canon 5Drs 50.6 mp and I prefer this over the 14fps. Next year the Canon will have a 60 mp camera with all the goodies that the Canon 5D Mk 4 has.

Neither! Learn to use what you have and spend your money on better glass and lighting. Learn to have a photographic eye and exploit it to the fullest. A great camera taking photos of things that have been shot a million times before still gives you poor photos.

But a body that can handle higher ISO values gracefully would improve my photography more for less money than any lens could.

Bebu ... this is the point, you see ... you can't have BOTH ....

Want a fast frame rate? ... live with a modest 20MP ...

Want 51MP? ... Lucky if you get 5-6fps ...

It's an EITHER, OR situation

Oh I didn't know how many MP or fps of each camera. But if you say 14fps with 20MP or 51MP with 5 or 6 fps then my choice is definitely the 14fps. I don't need it that fast but my lenses aren't sharp enough for 51MP so there is no advantage to me with 51MP. Add to that I don't often be careful enough to get really sharp image due to hand shake or minor focusing error.
And once again if the 2 camera mentioned are the 2 that I think about the 14fps camera is a much nicer camera regardless of how fast or how many MP it has.

To answer the question asked, and in consideration of my work as a sports action shooter, I would take the 14fps version. Like SS, I have both, in the Nikon versions. Best of luck.

I used a large format camera for twenty years and shot an average of 5 frames per day. The scans where 500 mp.
