Are 2X TCs worth having....
Once more I have discovered that conventional wisdom is wrong! My favorite photography subjects is nature and wildlife. I own a 600mm f/4 lens and a Sony A99II full frame camera. I also own both a 1.4TC and a 2XTC. I came to the conclusion that because the resolving power my 42MP camera was better than the resolving power of my TCs. My TCs were now obsolete. I recently found out that if I use the TCs with the lens at f/8 or higher they work much better. While it's rare that f/8 can be used while pursuing wildlife, more stationary subjects can be photographed very well. We all know that 2X TCs lose snap/contrast. Well here is a photo taken with a 600mm f/4 lens and a 2X TC at f/8. This is an effective 1200mm lens and yest the depth of field is narrow.
I use my Canon 2X teleconverter on my 50 megapixel 5DSR and it seems to work ok. Of course I guess it has a lot to do with what one is photographing and what lens they are using. I don't use it for shooting wildlife but I do use the 1.4X teleconverter for wildlife.

I would love to see someone post a crop of 400mm F4 (at f8) with a 400mm 2xTC (at equiv f8) to compare.
I chose to buy a 150-600 sigma vs a 100-400mm +TC due to not having a definitive answer on the implied question above. Easier financial decision in the short term at 1/3 the cost :-)

Great photo of the Osprey! I see that you were at f/8. I'm starting to believe that TCs can be used successfully on a good lens if that lens is stopped down to f/8. I have not had much success with TC on lenses that were wide open.

Canon 50D and Canon 300 2.8 W/ 2X @ F8 - ( one stop down from wide open)
So, YES, a GOOD 2X TC works very well on an a very GOOD lens ! ( with proper technique and good light also ! )
