A large company such as Nikon? I'm sure they can get advanced credit if they need to. Nikon has plenty of assets. Plus, DSLR sales make up a relatively small amount of their profit; Nikon designs and manufactures imaging and optical devices for a variety of industries. They won't bust because of a single failed camera model.

So far it is not a "failed camera model" and I doubt it will be. But consider the number of international banks that have been bailed out by their respective governments in the last few years. Big is not necessarily beautiful, and Nikon's financial problems are not exactly breaking news.
A problem for most big companies is - they cannot stand still - they have to go up - or go down.
I don't shoot Nikon and never have, but I believe the world would be a poorer place with out them.

After all the back and forth on this subject you'd think the D850 has been delayed for 8 months. does anyone realize how long it has been since the official announcement?

THREE WEEKS AND THREE DAYS

When a company announces a product, they have so long to put it on the market or they face penalties fro the government.
I question if that is true as there are product announcement quite often which have not gone into production. Do you have a link?
With Nikon's recent history, since they have started making their cameras over seas and can't seem to keep their quality control
Nikon is overseas! If you mean that not all their products are made in Japan, then that has bee the case for a long time.
I suspect they are having quality control issues that is holding up the release of the camera.
No that is a possibility and it would be smart of them to make sure the bugs (that all new products have had since the start of the industrial revolution 100 plus years ago) are gone
By shipping a few around the globe they are probably avoiding penalties while the stock of cameras that should be out in the stores sits in the factory waiting to be fixed.
Pure speculation with a touch of bias

One store I called in Portland, the salesman volunteered to tell me that the initial batch was only 100 units. I'll never understand why so many salesmen love to lie.

Not sure what Portland store you're referring too, I placed an order for a d850 at Pro Photo in Portland, they told me it would probabl wouldn't arrive until November.

Waiting to launch a new product until you have enough for the demand costs warehouse space. Far better to launch, take preorders, build some, and slowly send the newest, greatest, latest model to authorized dealers in large cities so reviewers can talk about lines and quick sell outs. Scarcity fans the flames of demand, just as Apple is doing with the iPhone X.

Shutterbug in Portland told me the same after I called pro photo. But the salesman was trying to explain why this camera is out of stock. I didn't ask him anything else, except if he had any in stock. After he told me that there were only 100 cameras released in the initial batch, he said: just think about that. 100 cameras for the whole country. But what pro photo told you is irrelevant, so I'm not sure why you quoted my post.

For a start, you could release the CAPS LOCK key.

Just two days (9/18) after this thread was posted stores in the US started to receive another shipment. I guess Nikon has its stuff together after all.

And how large is this shipment?
Making periodic small shipments will be a good safety valve, but an individual won't be happy until her/his is received by the merchant and in possession of the individual.
