I want to buy a new D850, and no one has one to sell me. I've placed an order at Adorama, but they say November. Does anyone have ny ideas?

It's a brand new product, patience is the by word.

My feedback from talking with a couple of the big dealers is that the 850's are not in yet --certainly not in any quantity -- and that demand is very high. They are thinking larger shipments will begin in about a month.

Nikon probably had a good idea of what initial demand would be. They could have held the launch until they had more stockpiled, but they apparently felt that launching now was a better marketing move. They get to make that choice.

Waiting to launch a new product until you have enough for the demand costs warehouse space. Far better to launch, take preorders, build some, and slowly send the newest, greatest, latest model to authorized dealers in large cities so reviewers can talk about lines and quick sell outs. Scarcity fans the flames of demand, just as Apple is doing with the iPhone X.

What this group thinks isn't going to have any effect on Nikon's ability to manufacture enough product to meet demand without compromising the quality of their product.
Just be patient and wait until they become available. Nikon will be making them for many years to come.

Hard to come by due to astronomical demands and hundreds of thousands of pre-orders.
Initial shipment to USA was 420 units, mine is SN 401. Second small shipment due later this week, I hear it may be more than 1000 units.

One store I called in Portland, the salesman volunteered to tell me that the initial batch was only 100 units. I'll never understand why so many salesmen love to lie.

Professional "salesmen" are paid to lie for the purpose of making a sale at any cost. He didn't have a clue so he picked a ridiculous number out of the air to try and impart his knowledge on you! The one thing he had right was that the first shipment was limited.

The same thing happened when I wanted to buy the new D90. I bought one online, and it turned out to be gray market, so I returned it. The local camera store had one, but I had to pay $100 over list. When I got a D7000 a few years later, I learned that the camera store was charging $100 over list for that. So much for local camera stores.

When the D900 is announced, pr-order one.
