Got my Novice (WN2DPY) ticket back in 67 in N.Y. when you had to be rock bound(crystal controlled). Moved To Florida in 70 (KA4LFS). Upgraded to General in 77 (N4IBG). Now retired I am still active on the radio. I know it seems strange that anyone would still be interested in Ham Radio when you have cell phones , internet etc, but there is just something about ham radio that has kept my interest. Remember, when all communications are out because of natural disasters, ham radio is the only source of communications.

I was first licensed in 1960 as K3MER when I lived on the naval base in Bainbridge, MD, next to Port Deposit, MD on the Susquhana River. When I moved to Santa Monica, CA the old FCC rules would not let me use my K3 call as a "portable" for an extended time, so I applied for a new license and received my current call, W6ANC. When I moved from CA the rules were changed to let me keep my call wherever as long as I notify the local FCC office and sign /portable wherever. Wherever has turned into Minnesota, Texas, and after several years working in Europe, back to MN. which is where I still reside.

Like most at our vintage, I am no longer active but maintain my license. Some years ago the state of MN allowed me put my 6 call on MN license plates where they are proudly displayed.

I think that computers and cell phones have supplanted ham radio as a technical hobby. I saw the handwriting on the wall back in the early 70's. I was in the computer business as a programmer, initially, then marketing, sales and various management roles. I retired last year from a company I co-founded back in 2000.

My jobs required that I travel a lot, including internationally. I always had a camera with me to force me to get out of my hotel rooms and see things. I have cases of slides and some boxes of pictures of places I've been, events and sites I've seen.

So, while I have taken a lot of film I consider myself a gadget hound rather than a photographer. My daughter has a good artistic eye but I do not. She got her own camera when she was 6 or 7. By the time she was 11 or12 I got her a film Olympus SLR. These were days before digital. She has since migrated to digital.

In the good old film days we focused on shooting and left post processing to the labs. Now, we shoot less and spend more of available time doing our own processing. This is counter to my original premise of spending more time shooting as a way to get out and see things.

Thanks to all for stopping by. There are more Ham Radio operators out there than most people know. If they knew how much Hams do in the background they wud have a better opinion of us. My small local Club put in 169 man/hours of time for Public Service this past year.
73 to all, WB3IVX

Thought about getting a ham license around 1950 but didn't act on it. Finally got one in 1979. Passed the advanced exam by accident (knew all the tech stuff but passed a multiple guess test on the code by getting 5 letters out of the 13wpm code test). Got the extra about a month later (no problem with the code once I started using it). Used the license until my wife pulled down my tower with a tractor (by accident, of course) around 1985. Having a little hearing deficiency, I was 90% CW.
