Use manual focus.

If all you want to do is see your dust specs, shoot a blue sky at or near infinity at F22. Open the image on your computer, increase the contrast and they will all be there, nice and sharp.

As others have suggested, you do seem to have the camera set to only take the picture if something is in focus. I would turn that off.

You can go manual focus are move your sensor to the edge of the paper when it can establish a focus, then, lock focus, move back and shoot.I have yet to see a photo of white paper win any photo contest, but, as they say, to each his own.

You can live without a picture of white paper. Find some other nonsense to amuse.

Set lens to manual focus. Focus at infinity. Set camera to aperture priority. Set aperture to f/22.

Color of specks doesn't matter. Since they are on the sensor they block the light and will show up as black.

Certain Canon cameras, when this process is used, record the data in the image file. Canon's DPP software use the data to automatically delete the spots.

OK, The way to accomplish that test is this. Set the camera on manual. Meter on the paper and increase the exposure by two steps. Now focus on the edge of the paper. Keep the shutter release pressed 1/2 way, frame the entire piece of paper and push the shutter release.

The easier way is to look for the part of the menu system for your camera and switch off the "needs to be in focus to take the photo" selection. Then the camera will take the photo regardless of the image being in focus.

The third way is to purchase a device that will allow you to see dirt on your sensor. It's placed on the camera in place of the lens.

Forth way, buy a Pentax, this is built in feature. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Even your own eyeballs won't focus on (plain) white paper unless you can see its edges or beyond

I've been cleaning my sensors for years...and this is the first time I've seen where you want your white paper in focus. I've always read the opposite...everything totally out of focus. I shoot a piece of white foam core under a bright led desk lamp from about 6 inches, with aperture priority set to about f22, manual focus at infinity. Any spots that show up will be on your sensor. No need to worry about camera shake.

I recently purchased the Lenspen Sensorklear Loupe to aid in the actual cleaning. Not too sure about the Lenspen for cleaning...but the Loupe is great for checking your progress as you clean the sensor.

The Camera uses the contrast in the subject - dark areas against light areas to determine focus. When you present the sensor with a formless expanse of nothingness, how can it focus? Can you focus on nothing? Neither can the camera.

Before lynching Furbugsy, I know one valid reason that I sometimes "photograph" a plain smooth sheet of white paper -- When I set a custom white balance for shooting Infrared with my converted camera. I would suspect Furbugsy has a different reason.

And this can be a pain in the ass since the instructions I've most commonly seen suggest shooting with AF on. That does seem odd and I've found it is partly wrong. Setting the CWB works fine with the AF off as long as it is a "digital" lens that does have AF possible. Seems it does not work with vintage all manual lenses. At least not on my converted IR Pentax K-100D. In fact much of the time it works better to you bright green leaves as a target for calibration.

So what are you trying to do Furbugsy?

I read that if you take a photo on a white paper you could see if the camera sensor or the mirror needs to be cleaned. Thanks you all for your reply ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Well, I knew it would not be for the reason I'd do it. For setting a Custom White Balance for IR photography with a converted camera. I wrote about that already.

Furbugsy, should just set camera to manual focus and f/16 or f/22 and in fact it is probably best to leave every thing out of focus because what you are trying to do is essentially take a picture of dust (shadows) on your sensor, aim at empty sky and take a shot. Pentax cameras have an automated test for this that creates a Kodalith like high contrast image of the sensor. I thought other brands had it too. Perhaps not.

First I've heard of it.
