What am I doing wrong . I try to focus on a white paper and will not focus or take the picture π³ . Is there something I don't know?
A piece of blank white paper? No, it wont focus.
AF needs contrast.
And you have yout camera set to only take a pic when the camera thinks it is in focus.
The camera needs an object on which to focus. Draw an "X" or something similar on the piece of paper and it should work
In addition to the comments already made, I'd like to ask the purpose for which you are trying to photograph a blank piece of white paper? Your answer will determine my suggestion.

If its smooth white paper it can be difficult. AF needs something contrasting to focus on. If the paper has a rough grain it may AF, but on very smooth and evenly finished bright white paper it could be a problem. Additionally how far away from you is the paper, and what is the minimum focus distance (MFD) of the lens you are using? Maybe you're too close.

No AF will focus on white paper. It's not a design flaw.

Actually that's not entirely true. it depends on the lighting and the paper, the distance and the lens. If the paper has any roughness and whiteness variation a good AF system may see it. If the paper is ultra smooth with a consistent finish than I would agree with you.
I read that if you take a photo on a white paper you could see if the camera sensor or the mirror needs to be cleaned. Thanks you all for your reply π

In that case set the camera to take picture even when it's not in focus. The easiest way to set it to manual focus then set the lens around infinity. The paper is out of focus but you want it that way to check for dust.

What you don't know is that it won't focus on black paper either!!! LoL

...and use your smallest aperture to make the dust shadows more distinct.
You'll most likely have a longer shutter setting, but camera movement won't matter as the dust you are trying to find moves with the sensor.
OK, The way to accomplish that test is this. Set the camera on manual. Meter on the paper and increase the exposure by two steps. Now focus on the edge of the paper. Keep the shutter release pressed 1/2 way, frame the entire piece of paper and push the shutter release.
The easier way is to look for the part of the menu system for your camera and switch off the "needs to be in focus to take the photo" selection. Then the camera will take the photo regardless of the image being in focus.
The third way is to purchase a device that will allow you to see dirt on your sensor. It's placed on the camera in place of the lens.
