Dave,

I'm curious: Did you use the Nikon digital as well? If so, what kind of results did you get? I assume you had a sun filter over your lens(es).

I still have two K1000s, and a Sears/Pentax. Haven't used them in years, but loved them. They were the entry-level 35mm, and they got a lot of use! To get back into hobby photography, a got a used K10D, which is the entry-level digital that can accept the same lenses that worked so well on the K1000s, just have to manual-focus and aperture on the old lenses. Auto-focus works well on the new lenses.

I did use the Nikon with the 50mm lens. The results were as I expected, small but interesting.

Welcome, your Pentax camera is just fine I still have a K-7 that I pull out every now and then learn on what you have then make a decision on what brand you wish to go with you may even find that Pentax is the way to go if your lenses are all or mostly Pentax. Get out there and have fun.

Last month my wife and I drove to Orangeburg, SC to view the eclipse and get some pictures. My equipment consists of two
Pentax K1000 camera and a Nikon P510 digital camera. Proving that I know nothing about photography, my efforts produced
nothing. Is the Pentax still worth using?

With respect - it's more about education and experience than a camera. I still have the K1000 we bought for one of our daughters when she needed it for her high school photography class. Although it is not used much, I still admire the simplicity of the controls, and the build. Not sure any digital made today will last as long and still function as designed. You have a couple of winners. Learn to do them justice. The rewards are great. Best of luck.

Don't feel stupid, I haven't met or know of anyone who was born knowing all the ins and outs of photography. It's a lot of fun and sometimes the learning curve can be a little steep, but do not despair, make it fun and you will be well rewarded.

Very hard to say what went wrong without the evidence. I would suggest that you take some pictures that are not so difficult using settings on the camera that a light meter or other camera with meter say is right on. Have that developed and see what the results are. That way you can tell if it is the camera, or if the eclipse attempts were just using the wrong settings. K1000 is a very good, but all manual camera. I learned what little I know using one. It could be that the on camera meter is no giving you the correct readings.

Welcome to UHH!

When you show us a photo from a digital camera, check "(store original) Add Attachment". That way we can get to see the EXIF data and know details of the camera settings.

When replying to a particular post, use "quote reply" so we can tell who you are responding to.

A 50mm lens will make a photo with the subject about as large as you see it with your eyes. The sun needs to be magnified to get more than a "dot". This is accomplished with a telephoto or zoom lens that can get to 400mm (or equivalent for a digital camera with smaller than a 35mm sensor).

If you used a Nikon P510 you couldn't use it with a 50mm lens, it is not an interchangeable lens camera, it is a mega-zoom with a 42X range. If you did use this camera, zooming it to maximum magnification with the zoom lens would have helped.

As others here have said, the K1000 was a great camera in its day. I had the Nikon equivalent, the FM. And while I loved shooting film, shooting digital is more rewarding (and fun, actually) for me today. If you are looking for a great hobby and can afford new gear, you should check out some of the digital cameras that are out there today. If I had "Bill Gates money," I'd have about 40 different models. all brands.

The FM is a much better camera.

I still have my K-1000, not used much now. Have a Pentax K-50 that uses the lenses that I bought for the K-X that died and another Pentax semi-automatic. Good thing about Pentax is you can use the glass from the K-1000 on current digital cameras. Only cravat is that will have to go manual for the lenses which do not have the electronic connections.

The pentax have good lens you can get cheep if you look around. Film makes you plan you shots more because film cost more then using a dslr.
