Critique - which of the three compositions is better and why?

The first gives a "dawn" feeling of the end of a long day. The third gives a vibrant environment of boats and rustic structures, and a delightful reflection in a blue harbor.

Number two is the most satisfying composition to my eye, by far. It is a photo of a harbor. Number one and number three do not feature the boats, the docks or any of the buildings, yet don't give a good feel for the harbor, either. But number two - very nice.

I don't think it hurts the composition to have the horizon more of less splitting the image in two equal parts in this case, and the horizon seems level to me. I tried cropping number two various ways as suggested by others here, but it always made the image look too "cramped" and crowded for my taste. I like the expanse of sky and water as shown in number two, and I like the way the rip-rap on the right and the dock on the left frame the shot.

Number 2 for me. Good color balance and composition. One is too dark. Three has lost its focus, is it houses or boats

Many years ago I read a quote by Robert Capa: "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough".

I like the last one; the first is too dark, and the last has too many things along the right side to draw attention from the main subject..the boats.

Without my contacts in and glasses on--so essentially blind except for shapes--I prefer #1 because it's not so centered and leads the eye around the frame. But I suppose you're not asking the opinion of blind people.

#3 is too busy for me. #2 not sure what your subject is. #1 is subtle and brings in the boats especially the red one. As for the tilting et al all correctable on PS.

#3 for me. The boats being closer adds more color, shows the reflections better and puts them in the left third while still showing the cove. It also takes most of the plain sky out.

Ha - I can see that you haven't read all the previous posts - especially where we worked out that the pictures are not tilted -have another look at the mountains in #3!

[quote=wham121736]Still more...Here are some free e-books you can download. I've used much from them in a "Composition in Photography" course I teach to senior citizens: Image Composition", by Markus Kapferer,"Photography Composition", by James Carren,
"The Photographers Eye", by Simon Rivera, "The Photographers Coach", by Robin Whalley,"Story Telling Photographs", By Anne Darling

Wham, great suggestions! I fit in the category of your students; a senior and photographic neophyte who wants to learn. I will download the e-books you recommended. What part of the country (maybe continent) is your class taught?

[quote=Michael feather Frame]...would like to see a bigger Image to work from . . . feather

Michael, I'm too new to understand all the terms yet. What do you mean by a "bigger Image?" And what's your reference to "feather?"

[quote=Blenheim Orange]Number two is the most satisfying composition to my eye, by far...

Thanks, Mike. When I saw the scene the first time, it was the entire scene that caught my eye. I only tried to capture part of the serenity and beauty of the moments. I agree with other, however, that there are a number of shots that I could have focused on when I presented the shot...all of them excellent points, i.e., focus on the boats, the old huts, lobster traps, etc.

What's really helpful are the numerous constructive comments about the three pics and why fellow hogs felt the way they do. The comments really help open my eyes to more than the initial reaction. That's really powerful.

Thanks for your comments, Mike.

SWFeral, on the contrary, there are many times that blind people "see" better than those with 20/20. I appreciate ALL constructive feedback.

#2 gets my vote, it tells more of a story and adds the reflection of the second barn that is nice.
