Sorry, I couldn't resist jumping in on this one. Look, anyone who has read Consumer Reports over the years understands that you don't always get what you pay for. Expensive is not always the best, sometimes inexpensive is. I have seen reviews and tests that have trashed specific Canon, Nikon, Tamron, Sigma, Tokina lenses and highly praised other lenses by the same manufacturers. It is entirely possible that a specific Tamron lens would test out comparable to a Zeiss T* lens. It may not be likely, but it is possible.

I have the Tokina 12-24 F4 (now made as a 12-28) and it's tack sharp and priced within reason. Had it for about seven years, first on a D90 and now a D7100.

Two things I don't like about the new Nikon is that it is slow and has a variable aperture.
Either of the Tokinas would be a better choice for me. The 11-16 to save a few $$$ or the 11-20 for more $$$ and a slightly wider range.
