I own a Nikon camera but own only 3rd party lenses! Maybe quality not as good as OEM, but I don't see a whole lot of difference except price!

Another Sigma 10-20 mm user here. I got the slower version based on Thom Hogan's review of ultra wide lenses a number of years back. I don't need an F2.8 version myself. I have since gone on to an FX format and my 20mm F4 Nikkor is now my go to super wide for my D610 ( i also have an FX AF 19-35 F3.5 zoom). I still have the Sigma 10-20mm for my D7100 though. It's a winner in my book. Yeah, it may not bench test as good as some other lenses but bench testing is way different than real world shooting. I seldom use any of my wide angle lenses, but they are there should I need them & they didn't cost an arm & a leg. Here is a link to an image taken with that lens plus Thom Hogan's original review...

I own a Tokina AT-X-11-20 F2.8 DX and would echo other recommendations for that choice. It has a better dxomark score than various other options and has fast F2.8 aperture. Also, you may look at this site for lenses to consider:

My Tokina 11-16 is my go to lens for wide angle. Built like a brick sugar house, very sharp and fast. You can get a gently used one on eBay reasonably. For the d500, you wouldn't need the newer model with the focusing motor. Good luck.

Take a look at the new Nikon 10-20mm DX lens. Ken Rockwell thinks it is a real bargain for what it costs. Just know that it may not take the abuse that other lenses might provide, such as the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8. The Sigma art line gets high approval from many users. Some lenses have different features, for example, some with vibration reduction, some without. What is important to you?

The Tamron 10-24mm (the new version) is likely to be the best in this class of lenses. My Nikon 16-80mm and this lens are my best lenses.

For what it's worth, Photo Plus Magazine (for Canon) tests lenses. they rated the Sigma 12-24 f4 DG HSM A, the Sigma 12-24 f4.6-5.6 II DG HSM, the Tamron SP AF 10-24 f3.5-4.5 Di II LD very high. I have the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 AT-X PRO DX II which was not rated very high by Photo Plus but which I have been happy with and agree the clutch mechanism is nice to have. The Tokina is very reasonably priced, especially if you can find a used one.

Can't beat Nikon, but both Tokina and Sigma make excellent lenses. I have owned several Sigmas and one Tokina. All were excellent. I did have one Sigma that was a bit soft for my taste. Would have been perfect shooting weddings.

I have a sigma 10-20 4-5.6 DC HSM that I use on my D300. I love this lens. I actually keep this lens on my camera most of the time. If you plan on shooting interiors you might look at the 3.5 version of this lens. Even on a crop sensor camera you have to get up close and personal with this lens.

I have the Tokina 11-20 2.8 and highly recommend you investigate it as a potential. From my memory, it is faster than the Nikon, feels very robust and delivers excellent shots. PM me, if you want to see some of my samples. Good luck on your search!

I had the Tokina 11-16 and now the Tokina 11-20 love them both but would recommend the 11-20

I highly recommend Tamron as yet another alternative. I'll put my Tamrons up against anyone for quality and durability. Sigma and Tokina are good too, though a little more expensive than Tamron, and any of them will go head-to-head with Nikon or Canon lenses.
